Out & About: Twin River Valley/Central Decatur

#5 posting 3.5. 2006

Iowa 1A Quarterfinals Game #2
Twin River Valley 41, Central Decatur 25

This was the slowest paced or more deliberate game of the day. Both teams, but especially Central Decatur looked to take the choice shot. It was hard to come by.

The first quarter both teams had 17 possessions combined compared to the 35 possession total in the first game. Central Decatur had one lead for the game and that occurred at 5-4 with a three by Callan Bethards. TRV put together a 3 run string with Liz Trauger scoring 4 in the 6-3 run. TRV led 8-5 at the break.

Neither team lit it up in the second quarter either as each team only scored 3 times in the 10 possessions they had. The highlight of the quarter took place when Tiara Smith picked up a poorly thrown ball and made a three at the buzzer to cut TRV’s lead to 15-11.

TRV put together a strong 3rd quarter with 8 of 10 possessions resulting in a score. Trauger scored 9 of the 15 points for TRV. Central Decatur also had a better offensive performance, but it was only a matter of adding one score (4/10). TRV led going into the 4th 30-18.

In the last stanza the game was mainly set with TRV. At about four minutes to go and a 34-22 lead TRV decided to take CD out of their 2/3 zone. They had one possession with 38 touches as they drew them out of the zone and forced CD to use their fouls. The rest of the game TRV scored from the line.

With the matchup on Wednesday between TRV and IKM I believe IKM will win. They run a different pace and have more horses in the stable.
