A RUN THROUGH THE SECTIONS
AAAA
1. This was the overtime section as #4 Lakeville North won the rubber game of the series with Rosemount 65-60 in OT. Also #2 Rochester Mayo went 2OT to beat Owatonna 51-50. Owatonna had brought up a secret weapon, a 6-2 freshman Jenna Yentsch late in the year. She had 13 points but it wasn't enough. Mayo takes on LN in Rochester next Friday.
2. #2 Edina DID beat Chaska 50-48. I picked up the story on the StarTribune's sportshuddle last night but it was transposed. They will face #1 Hopkins at the Pavillion next Thursday.
3. As I reported in the 4x4 posting last night #3 Tartan squeaked past Cretin-Derham Hall on Erica Jost's free throws and will play St. Paul Central Thursday at St. Paul Arlington HS.
4. Roseville beat Stillwater with their big three combining for 68 points. #7 White Bear Lake who now has won four in a row, beat up on #3 St. Paul Johnson 71-63. They play at Tartan next Friday
5. They got the quarters finished and moving on will be #1 Maple Grove vs #5 Armstrong and #2 Irondale will play #6 Cooper who upset Wayzata in OT 44-39. The Semis will be on Wednesday at Park Center.
6. As I reported both top seeds advanced setting up the dream match up #1 Minneapolis South undefeated and guard centric vs #2 Bloomington Kennedy with one loss and an imposing front line. That will take place at the pavillion at the U of MN next Thursday.
8. #5 Elk River handed St. Cloud Tech their third loss of the year 41-40. Story from Elk River paper http://www.erstarnews.com/2006/March/53-4elkgbb.html Moorhead will provide the opposition for ER at St. John's U next Friday.
AAA
1. Lakeville South magic ran out against #5 Northfield, or maybe teams were finally paying attention to the first year school. #2 New Prague beat Albert Lea for the right to face Northfield next Friday at Rochester.
2. It will be a Southwest Conference rematch with #1 Marshall taking on #2 Worthington at Gustavus. Worthington had the closer contest with a 62-59 win over #3 Litchfield
3. #1 DeLaSalle eeked out a win over Minneapolis Roosevelt 50-48 and Holy Angels, who has not lost in 2006 with 16 straight wins now, beat sister Catholic School Hill-Murray 67-62
4. #1 St. Michael-Albertville thumped Annandale and will face # 3 Monticello who beat Mississippi 8 rival Becker 52-47. They will play the late game at St. John's on Friday.
5. There quarters got under way with the only upset #5 Mpls North taking out St. Louis Park 61-46, but I didn't consider that a shocker. North will play #1 Benilde-St. Margaret's, while #2 Waconia faces #3 Orono next Wednesday at Mpls Edison.
6. #1 Rogers and #2 North Branch opened the season, and for one school it will be the last game of the season. NB just got by Spring Lake Park 49-48 after trailing at halftime by three. Their finals will be at Osseo next Friday.
8. I have found only one score and that was the upset of #1N Detroit Lakes 54-48 by Fergus Falls. But really how big of an upset is it when Fergus beat Detroit Lakes twice during the year by 9 and by 2. Fargo paper story http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=119667&section=Sports
I have not heard on Willmar and Park Rapids. The score was not in the Fargo paper and the game was across the Red River at MN State Moorhead.
AA
1. #1W Kingsland took out Rochester Lourdes, the only team to pin them with a loss 38-25. They will take on #1E Winona Cotter who beat Caledonia 50-41. That match up will be Thursday in Rochester. Story from Winona paper http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2006/03/05/highschoolsports/00lead.txt
4. Quarters were held and most top seeds advance. The only one to falter was #2E Concordia Roseville who lost to Visitation 42-40. Visitation had to make up a six point half time deficit. Viz will play Cannon Falls in one semi final, while Breck steamrolled its way to the semis with a 72-39 win over Zimmerman. Story in Elk River paper http://www.erstarnews.com/2006/March/53-4breckgbbb.html They face Jordan who beat Minnesota River foe Holy Family 78-56. Both Semis are at Delano on Wednesday.
5. #1N Eden Valley-Watkins will play #1S Watertown-Mayer in the championship Friday at St. Cloud State. EVW beat Howard Lake by five. WM beat Norwood-Young America by 9.
6. #1W Albany trounced Holdingford by 21 and will face #1E Foley who slipped by Pierz 59-57. That game will take place at St. Cloud State on Friday.
7. It was quarterfinal day with most top seeds advancing. The exception was #3W Pequot Lakes beat Deer River 54-53. They will play #1E Esko at Hibbing on Wednesday. In the other semi #1W Crosby-Ironton will see #2E Proctor.
8. In keeping with the quarterfinal mode and one upset 8AA did not disappoint. #2S DGF lost to a tournament veteran Hawley team 51-48. All other top seeds advanced without too many problems. #1S Barnesville will face Heart O'Lakes foe Hawley in one semi at Concordia Moorhead on Monday, while #1N Crookston faces East Grand Forks at UM Crookston on Monday.
A
4. There were two quarterfinal upsets #3S Christ Household of Faith beat Mounds Park 43-34. Now CHOF will face #1S West Lutheran in the semis. #3 Maranatha beat Heritage 63-48. So #1N Meadow Creek will see MCAA rival Maranatha in the other semi. The semis are at Fridley on Wednesday.
5. No upsets in the quarters here. #2NW Parkers Prairie took out #4 Brandon-Evansville and will play #1NE Browerville in one semi. This section has four #1s, so don't get a headache trying to figure it all out. #1SE Osakis, the last undefeated team left in A, will see #1SW Ortonville in the other semi at Minnewaska HS in Glenwood on Monday.
6. With no upsets in 5, 6 provided two in their quarters. #1E Nevis advanced over Hill City and will face #3 Verndale upset winners over Menahga. the East semi will be at Park Rapids on Monday.
#1W Ada-Borup crushed Park Christian 60-31 (Fargo paper story http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=119661&section=Sports ) and will see #3 Lake Park-Audubon who knocked off Ulen-Hitterdal a team they lost to twice during the year. Fargo paper story http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=119660&section=Sports The west semi is on Monday at Concorida Moorhead.
7. After the Ash Wednesday massacre in the North things settled down and the top remaining seeds #5 Tower-Soudan, a defending champ, and #6 Cook County move on and will face counterparts from the South. Tower-Soudan will face upset winner #3S Wrenshall on Wednesday at UM Duluth. #1S Barnum takes on Polar foe Cook County in the other match up.
8. What is up with #8E Grygla-Goodridge? They took out a 8 power #4 Red Lake Falls last night 48-46. They face #2E Fosston who had no mercy on Clearbrook-Gonvick in a 67-37 shellacking. CG beat Fosston during the season 61-50. Obviously some adjustments were made.
On the west end #1W Badger-Greenbush-Middle River had their hearts broken again this time by #5 Stephen-Argyle in a 54-52 game. #2W Kittson Central beat the Northern Freeze 65-45. Both semis will be Monday at the Engelstad arena in Thief River Falls.
