This game took place on Friday, June 29
Dakota Showcase, Augustana
Sioux Falls
pool play
KANSAS CITY HUSTLE 62, IOWA ELITE I 58

This was the final pool play game and it was a roller coaster ride for Iowa Elite I. They climbed the mountain late in the contest, only to stall. This, plus the All Iowa Attack/Mid Missouri Hustler game just prior to this game, was a good way to finish the pool play. They took away the stench of the massacres I witnessed earlier in the day. Again this was a battle between two undefeated teams. Win and it is quarterfinals, lose and it is the Silver bracket. The Hustle did just that in the end.

IEI led early 4-0 , and held an 8-5 lead. Morgan Hammer was the force for IEI with four points. KCH had a five possession sequence where they went on a 14-2 run. IEI had a five possession drought. That was the key sequence of the game and IEI had to struggle to get out of the whole all game. Later in the first half both teams were trading baskets. Combined they were 11/12 in their offensive possessions. IEI delivered six straight scores. Five different IEI players contributed in the burst. By half time KCH led 35-31.

In the second half IEI was able to cut the margin to 38-37. Another KCH burst, this time a 15-4 run, put a cushion in their margin. Drew Roberts had five points in the run. KCH had three 3s in the flurry. Then KCH had an eight possession drought and IEI made use of that slumber with a 10-0 run. That closed the gap to 53-51. Danielle Bird finally found the bottom of the net with two free throws. However Ashley Arlen was taking over and lifting IEI up to the top of the mountain. She had 7 straight points and put IEI on top with two free throws with 2:30 left 56-55. Then, just like Moses on top of mountain seeing the promised land, IEI was prevented from crossing over. They picked a bad time to go cold with six possession drought. Even Arlen came up dry three times down the wire. Meanwhile KCH had a 7-2 finish. Drew Roberts provided three free throws. Clare Duwelius scored for IEI off a pass from KK Armstrong for the final score of 62-58, but each team had a possession left. KCH missed at the line and IEI missed on a three that would have still left them one behind.
