MINNESOTA ELITE CAMP
ALL STAR GAME 1-20
GOLD 58, MAROON 47
First off the photos are OK, but Blogger is having problems uploading them to their site. There will be photos at a later date. Since have been added.
Second: This is the first time the Elite camp has had their all star game on Thursday morning. Usually it was on the last full day evening. They had to switch the times to comply with the NCAA Rules and regulations.
Third: the All Star games were held at the same time. Usually in the past All Star game 40-21 led off the night. Due to time constraints that didn't happen this year.
Fourth: some players were picked for the all star game, but either had prior commitments and did not stay, or had injuries.
Enough warning signs, now on to the game.
Maroon started off hot with scores in four of their first five possessions. Even with the hot start they were up 8-6 as Kelsey Jacobson knocked down two from downtown. After that flurry the next wave of five came in for both teams and a status quo emerged. There were three ties during their court time. Gold held Maroon to a six possession drought with five of those tries ending in turnovers. Gold added to their totals with a 7-0 run. Shelly Stemper converted a couple of times in transition off Maroon turnovers. Maroon edged back into the game with a three by Anna Kovalchuk 19-17, and went ahead 23-21 on a post up by Aaryn Booker. That proved to be Maroon's final points of the half. They spent the next nine possessions in droughtland and Gold seized that opportunity to the tune of a 13-0 run to lead 34-23 at the half. Jacobson had 13 points at half for Gold. The DeLaSalle pair of Booker and Kovalchuk had six each for Maroon.
On the first possession of the second half Alise Holst broke the drought with a basket. After that Gold put their stamp on the game again with a 14-1 run which effectively put the game out of reach. Maroon's drought wasn't as long (8 possessions) but the result was the same. Gold led 48-26 at that point with 14:30 to go. Abby Busch scored the first six points in the second half for Gold. Tyisha Smith had five in the run. Maroon kept plugging away. Cassie Rochel had six straight points for Maroon as they shaved some of the margin down to 54-39 with about six minutes to go. Stemper knocked down a three to push the lead back to 57-39 right away. Megan Waytashek had two 3 point plays--one old school, one beyond the arc to cut the lead to 58-45. A lay up by Holst ended the scoring 58-47. One interesting note in the last 11 minutes of the second half--Gold only had one defensive stop. The last 7 minutes of the game Maroon outscored the winners 13-4.
