Adidas Mid-American Tournament, Hopkins
17u semifinals
MN STARS HESTED 66, ECI WEST GOLD 51
MN Stars Hested used their deeper bench and balance to zoom past ECI West Gold in the Mid American semifinals 66-51. ECIWG had two players on the bench, MSH six. ECIWG was missing Kylie Messer, who played in Sioux Falls the week before. ECI is from North Dakota. MSH hosted this tournament.
Shawna Knife drew first blood with a three from the left side. MSH answered that with a five possession run with each player on the floor contributing. MSH led 10-5 at that point. Both teams went on a 9/10 offensive sequence. Mara Paulson had six points for ECIWG, MSH had a five possession run in that stretch and led 21-16. ECIWG did come back and led 22-21 after ECIWG was scoring on the MSH press. Once that press was lifted and ECIWG had to score against five players, the game turned. ECIWG likes to run and with that option limited MSH then finished the half with a 15-8 run. At half MSH led 36-30. Georgie Jones had 8 at the break for MSH, Lauren Carew had 10 for ECIWG.
In the second half MSH maintained their advatage. At one point ECIWG had the opportunity to shave into the lead, but missed free throws left points on the table. MSH led 47-36 with 13 minutes left. ECIWG missed five straight free throws over three straight possessions. The North Dakota team managed to get one point at the end, but an opportunity to get the game within shouting distance at 47-42 passed. Instead it was 47-37 and soon thereafter it was 55-39. After that ECIWG went into a seven possession drought with two of those chances ending up as turnovers. MSH's biggest lead came at 61-39 with 5:30 left. ECIWG did have an 8-0 run with the three ball predominating. The fact was that it was too late to really make a difference. When the flurry was done there was 2:15 left at 61-47.
