15u semifinals
MINNEAPOLIS LADY CATS 66, MN STARS SCHMITZ 62
The Mpls Lady Cats came back from 15 down in the second half to beat the hosts in the 15u semifinals. The Lady Cats are usually a 13u team, but with Tyisha Smith, and now Keke Greenlee, added to the roster they become a 14u team. They managed to do a revival due to their ferocious defense and persistence.
The Lady Cats started the game with four straight scores and an 8-4 lead before going on a five possession drought. MN Stars Schmitz went on a 12-2 run and took a 16-10 lead. Brittany Thiesfeld had six of the points in the run. MSS then went on a 7 possession drought. MLC took advantage of that down time for an 8-0 run. As was typical of the first half MSS then went on a 17-3 run and led 33-21. During the time MLC had a six possession drought. It is hard to get the full court press going when the offense is stymied. MLC had one more field goal to end the scoring in the first half. MSS was up 33-23 at the break.
Things were rolling MSS's way in the early portion of the second half as they stretched thier lead to 45-30 with 10:30 to go. Then the comeback began. Aubrey Davis started MLC down the long road back with a steal and then a free throw. That started a 9/10 run where MLC cut the deficit to five--53-48. The Cats went on a 16-5 run to get the margin down. MSS did have a resurgence with a 5-2 run to go back up 58-50. MSS then went into an eight possession tail spin. MLC went on an 9-0 run to take the 59-58 lead with 1:58 to go. Tyisha Smith gave MLC their first lead in the second half with two free throws. MSS tied it up with a free throw by Kellie Ring. On MLC's next possession Smith drove in to break the tie 61-59. Two possessions later Lauren Wittman canned a three for MSS to take a 62-61 lead with under a minute left. Brianna Williams scored off a pass from Smith to put MLC up for good 63-62. Smith then added three free throws over the last two possessions for the final margin. Williams played a big part in getting the ball back with two steals ending MSS's last two possessions.
