This game took place on Sunday, May 5
Skyview AAU Tournament
Varsity Championship
MN STARS HESTED 66, MN STARS BOROWICZ 48

I reported on this game on Sunday on the Gabcast channel.

This was the championship game in what should have been called the Stars invitational. In this civil war battle it was Hested, the flagship team of the Stars Fleet sailing into port with a victory. If you compare the two rosters Hested's group has 6 state champions, and 8 players that were in the top five teams this year. Borowicz's group has no state champs (at least in basketball) and 3 that were in the state tournament. Hested also has three players that have already verballed D1 programs. That experience, plus the height and athleticism put Hested on top. They were the only team close to the 100 pp100 this weekend.

It was Borowicz that drew first blood on their first possession with Sarah Hintz making two free throws. Hested went on a 11-2 run to take an 11-4 lead. Theairra Taylor ignited Hested with seven points in all sorts of ways: on transition, from beyond the arc, and on a second chancer. Borowicz was 2/12 on their possessions, only two of which were turnovers. Hested also had a slow offensive stretch with five possession drought, three were turnovers. Hested broke that spell with a 4/5 possession string on a 9-2 run to go up 20-10. Borowicz closed with a 5/8 string on a 10-6 run led by Laura Dietel's six points. Hested led at half 28-22.

The game remained in a six point zone until Hested erupted with a 13-2 run. Borowicz had a seven possession drought during the stretch with four ending up as turnovers. Hested had another run with six straight offensive scores with six different players doing the honors. Hested's biggest lead was 57-35. Borowicz did close somewhat to 57-42, but it was soon back to 22.

BY THE NUMBERS
Hested 66, 70, 94.3, .471
Borowicz 48, 71, 67.6, .352
made 3s: Hested 4, Borowicz 1
made fts: Borowicz 11, Hested 6
bench: Borowicz 23, Hested 20
One key factor in the second half was Hested's team scoring 12 points on second chancers to Borowicz's five.
Two other facts draw attention: Borowicz's bench actually outscored Hested's bench. So the depth of the teams are similar, however the starters ended up with Hested holding a 46-25 advantage.
The second eye opening trend is that Borowicz went to the line more often, and had a better go of it than in the semis. Borowicz only left six points on the table. Hested left 8 at the line.
