this game took place on Sunday, May 27
Memorial Day Classic, Menomonie, WI
Platinum Consolation--5th Place
TEAM WISCONSIN RED 39, VC CENTRAL WI 33

I reported on this game on Sunday on my Gabcast Channel, episode #34. If you are looking for photos you won't find any. My battery died and I didn't have a backup.

The 5th place game started off well for VCCWI with Heather Kessler scorching the nets for the first six points and scoring on her first three shots. VCCWI led 6-2. Unfortunately for VCCWI Kessler did not score the rest of the half and that lead evaporated as quickly as it built up. A nine possession drought put a crimp in VCCWI style and opened the door for TWR. TWR had an 8-0 run before VCCWI struck the bottom of the net again. The game was tied twice before VCCWI pulled in front on a free throw by Jocelin Finn. TWR finished the half with an 8-1 run with Anna Weddig notching four points to start the run. VCCWI was 1/8 to finish the half. TWR led 20-15 at half.

TWR led 26-20 early in the second half. VCCWI had an 11-7 run to close the gap to 33-31. VCCWI ran off four straight possessions to get the game tighter. There was about 9 minutes left in the contest. Then the bottom fell out again for VCCWI with only three free throws in a 2/10 offensive sequence, including coming up empty the last five possessions. TWR also had a struggle to finish with only one field goal and 3/11 offensive sequence. Neither team handled their late game situations strongly. It was 37-34 with 4:30 left. Shots didn't drop. The main shooters that were having success weren't taking the money shots. These players need to step up and take charge in these late game situations and not be spectators.
