MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC RECAP
Today I traveled to Menomonie, Wisconsin to watch the Memorial Day Classic. Action took place at UW Stout and I watched 8 contests focusing mostly on the Girls 16u teams.
Yesterday was pool play with 12 teams, 4 teams in three pools. The top six teams moved into the platinum level (the top level). the 3rd and 4th teams in each pool moved into the gold (second level).
Game # 1 was a gold quarterfinal with Chippewa Falls, primarily a HS team beating Lakeshore Breakers, primarily from Manitowoc, WI. 54-46. The Breakers led at half 26-24.
Game #2 was a platinum quarterfinal with the Chicago Jaguars topping Viking Club Central WI 40-32. Chicago at half 19-11.
Game #3 was the only 15u game on the menu the Team WI Select 15u vs Pride the only MN team in the older divisions. TWS15 dominated with the 6-6, yes I wrote 6-6, twin towers of Nicole Griffin and Ann Cole 38-13. This game was a semifinal. TWS15 moved on to the finals at Menomonie HS.
Game #4 was the gold semifinals with Chippewa Falls beating HLC#2 47-43. CF led 41-33 with about four minutes left. HLC put on a rally to tie it at 43 with 30 seconds left. CF finished up with four free throws by Andrea Larson.
Game #5 was the platinum semifinals with Randolph topping the Chicago Jaguars 38-35. The game was pretty tight throughout. The closest Chicago got waws 34-32 with 3:36 to go. Randolph scored on their next two possessions to advance.
Game #6 was a 3rd place game in the gold division and team WI White beat VC Central WI 39-34.
Game #7, the championship of the gold division went to Chippewa Falls 35-31 over Dykstra Engineering. CF led 32-20 with 13:50 left. They then went into offensive hibernation for 14 straight possessions. Again it was Andrea Larson that added free throws for the final margin of victory.
Game #8 was the finals of the platinum division. It was a revenge match featuring two teams from pool A: Randolph and Team WI Select 17. Randolph beat TWS17 on Saturday in the pool by two, but TWS17 did not have Hannah Quilling, their point guard, along with a couple of others. TWS17 was extremely focused, Randolph looke flat and tired. The result was TWS17 the champion at 42-25. This was the second tournament championship I have seen TWS17 take this season. Earlier in April TWS17 took that title.

If you notice the scores were quite low. Part of the reason was 20 minute running time halves. Also as the day went on the scores were dropping with the 54 points scored by Chippewa Falls in game one the top level of the day. The gyms weren't particularly hot or uncomfortable, but just the wear and tear of the action took its toll. In fact the #1 CF game was probably the only game where a team topped out over 100pp100.

I will be reviewing these games throughout the week.
Counting the two yesterday that makes 10 reviews coming.
The two Saturday games will be tomorrow also with Sunday's game #1.
On Tuesday game #2 -game #4
On Wednesday game #5 to game #7
On Thursday game #8
