this game took place on Sunday, May 27
Memorial Day Classic, Menomonie, WI
Gold Championship
CHIPPEWA FALLS 35, DYKSTRA 31

I reported on this game on Sunday on my Gabcast channel, episode #35.

This game was the gold championship (platinum featured the top six teams), so, in effect this was the 7th place game of this tournament. Dykstra started off 1/6 with their possessions, CF 1/5. Both teams loosened up. This game was tight early with four ties, the last coming at 8 all. CF first tied it and then moved on with a 8-2 run. Samantha Buonauro punctuated the run with a trey. CF continued their hot hand late in the half with a 5/6 sequence and an 11-4 run. CF, as they have demonstrated all Sunday, used their entire squad with Andrea Larson knocking down four to lead CF. Dykstra, a multischool team, was led by Amy Selk with six points in the half. CF led 25-14 at the half.

CF continued their hot hand to build up a 32-18 lead with 14:00 left when the door slammed shut. CF endured a 14 possession dry spell. It was the Sahara. Six of those possessions were turnover related. Dykstra went on a 12-2 rampage on a 6/8 offensive sequence. Simply taking over the game was Amy Selk who had 8 of those points, plus one assist. Two Selk free throws made it 32-28 with 9:00 left. Then Dykstra fell into the drought hole, this one 7 possessions deep. The problem was Selk only had one possession during that stretch. All of those Dykstra possessions were missed shots. Selk snapped Dykstra out of their slumber with a runner to close the score to 32-30 with 1:37 left. CF played the keep away game and Dykstra was forced to foul. The game was 20 minute running time, with the last two minutes stop time. Dykstra had to foul six, that is right, s-i-x, times to put CF at the line. finally with 1:00 to go Andrea Larson, the clutch ft shooter for CF, went to the line and broke their monumental drought. Dykstra's next possession did not have one touch by Dykstra. They had two shots, but neither fell. Emily Mattison got the key board and Jessica Anderson was fouled. She missed. The score remained 34-30 with 39.5 left. Brittni Buechel got the board and eventually, after a missed shot, she picked up the offensive board and was fouled. She converted the first, but missed the second. Larson got the rebound for CF and went to the line, but she came up empty for a change. Selk had a shot, but it was off. Larson rebounded again and marched to the line where she delivered one free throw. That finished the scoring. A single school took the gold title over all the multischools.
