FOREST LAKE AAU TOURNAMENT
There were surprises, thrills and nailbiters in Forest Lake today. The action was fast furious. Bodies were flying. It meant something. Crowds were quite large. In the end, after all the controversy surrounding the seedings, it was MN Stars Borowicz, ignoring the talk of the top three teams in the top half of the bracket, walking away with the title.
You can hear a bit of the results today on my Gabcast channel.
BOROWICZ'S STARS SHINE
MN Stars Borowicz shocked the field by beating North Tartan in the finals 62-55. The MSB path to the title started in pool D. They edged North Tartan Crosby 54-50 and slipped by MN Summit Blue 48-41 on Saturday. On Sunday they started off with a gold quarterfinal win over Southern Minne Magic White 57-29 and then topping MN Metro Stars Black in the semis.
North Tartan got to the finals with a whiteknuckle 65-64 double overtime thriller over NC Heat. The Heat led 38-28 with 9:50 to go in the game. Hannah Linz tied the game at the buzzer with a three from the left corner. She also struck from behind the arc to start the second overtime. In the end NT pulled out the win. Tayler Hill for NCH had 28 points in the loss.
In the championship game it was MN Stars Borowicz racing to a 32-8 lead with close to 6 minutes left in the first half. NT did close the gap somewhat before halftime to 37-19. NT kept whittling away at the lead in the second half testing the six point margin a couple of times. MSB answered the call each time pushing out to a 12 point lead and then again to 8. That lead narrowed again to five with under a minute left. MSB took care of the ball and delivered at the line for the final 61-55 margin. MSB has improved quite a bit from their 2nd place showing at Skyview a couple of weeks ago.
In other action today in the Silver (2nd place pool division) it was MN Stars Hested beating Quest 70-51. Quest won their quarterfinals with a 55-44 win over North Tartan Crosby. NTC led by 9 at half. Becca Friestleben lit up the boards for 19 second half points in the Quests' comeback win. Quest beat the Breeze 57-31 in the semis. MSH beat MN Swish 60-38 in their semis.
In the Bronze (3rd place pool finishers) it was Total Package taking the title with a 56-46 win over the Northern Lynx in the quarters, 42-39 win over Southern Minne Elite in the semis, and 46-42 over Metro Stars White in the Finals.
