this game took place on Sunday, May 13
Richfield AAU tournament
14/13u Quarterfinals
GYM RATS 14 43, MN STARS 13 38

I reported on this game on Sunday on the Gabcast episode #15

This tournament combined 14s and 13s. Also this game took place on the divided Richfield HS main court, so the 3 line didn't exist because it wasn't marked. There were some shots that probably would have dropped for 3, but no one got credit for a trey. Also AAU had 16 minute halves, not 7 minute quarters like MYAS.

The Stars 13 took the early lead at 7-3 with Maggie Seter scoring four for the Stars. The Gym Rats tied it up with a 6-2 run with Kayla Hirt putting the hurt on the Stars with four points. She was just warming up. Later she added six more on a 10-6 run for the Rats to make it 19-15. Hirt scored on transition and, with a height advantage, cleaned the boards and made use of second chancers with two baskets in the same run. At the half it was 23-19 Rats with Hirt racking up 12.

The Rats built their lead out to 8 as early as 29-21. The Stars 13 started off the second half 1/9 in their offensive sequence. They snapped out of it with four straight scores, but the problem was the Stars matched them so no advantage was gained. Alison McArthur had six of the eight Stars points. The Stars did cut the lead to 39-34 on a put back by Amber Mehr with about 3 minutes to go. Lauren Graham stopped a 1/8 offensive sequence for the Rats and put the margin back to 7 41-34. When the Rats were in their slower time the Stars also were off with a 2/8 sequence. The Stars never really crossed the five point margin the rest of the way and the game ended up with the Rats advancing 43-38.

As usual with youngsters there are a few miles to go with ball handling, decision making and strength issues. You can RF throughout the rosters on that issue.
