This game took place on Saturday, May 12
Chaska MYAS HS tournament
HS Varsity State tournament
First Round
HOWARD LAKE-WAVERLY-WINSTED 32,
CHASKA GOLD 24

This was a first round game in what was the MYAS State tournament for the HS varsity level. Neither team was chock full of varsity starters. HLWW had one player rostered (Gruenhagen) and one player from Winsted Holy Trinity (Chalupsky). Chaska did not have one varsity player. With the lack of varisty experience it showed in the performances.

Chaska was on their home floor and were more comfortable at the start as they jumped to a 10-2 lead after one quarter. Megan Evangalista opened scoring for Chaska, but it was Lynn Bielski putting on a strong show in the opening frame with 8 points. HLWW had a nine possession drought after scoring on their second possession, but only 3 were on turnovers. Early on they were content with perimeter shooting. But Chaska had their own 9 possession drought stretching between the tailend of the first quarter and most of the second, four of which were turnovers. HLWW took advantage of that spell to tie it up at 10 with 2:21 left in the half. HLWW did take a 12-11 lead on a transition lay up by Alissa Remer after a made Chaska free throw. A lay up by Gretta Camp put Chaska back out in front with 1:30 left in the half 13-12.

HLWW struck first in the second half with a post up by Ellie Wessling. HLWW was now looking to go inside, or had a key to figure out the combination to the Chaska defense that confused them in the first quarter. Of the four HLWW baskets in the third quarter all were posts except for one back cut---still in the paint. The biggest spread HLWW enjoyed in the third quarter was 3 points. Chaska succumbed to another drought, this time a seven possession drought that stretched from the end of the third to the middle of the fourth. HLWW didn't really seize the initiative at the time as they added only three points to their narrow one point lead at the end of the third. HLWW did kick it up a notch with a 6/8 scoring sequence late in the game with an 11-5 run. Wessling had the last five points for HLWW as there really wasn't any drama late 32-24.

HLWW lost their next game in the quarterfinals to Southern MN Magic White. The eventual champ was MN Thunder 16.

I won't delve into great detail with these players. In general the players need to get stronger physically, get stronger with ball handling, and take better shots. Some players may see some varsity time in the upcoming season, but the players with the zeros should probably be back on B teams.

MYAS is better organized than AAU, and the facilities, for the most part, are better, but the teams are not as top flight with more JV/younger players and single teams in MYAS. AAU has the multischool players and more All State, All Conference types (not that all AAU players are AC). The ironic thing was both teams faced each other again in the friendship game on Sunday.
