Minnesota State AAU Tournament
Cooper High School
16u Sweet 16
METRO STARS BLACK 72, NORTH TARTAN CROSBY 69
In a tight contest #5 Metro Stars Black avoided the upset bid from #12 North Tartan Crosby 72-69 in the sweet 16 round of the Minnesota AAU Tournament. There were some players missing for both teams, but MSB had three missing either due to track or tests. NTC had two MIA. The interesting factor in this game had MSB's Carolyn Dienhart and NTC's Molly Geske facing each other. They both play for Cretin-Derham Hall during the high school season.
NTC held a 36-23 lead with 2:29 left in the first half. MSB was mired in a 1/15 offensive sequence. Only four were the result of turnovers, the rest--poor shooting. The MSB held NTC scoreless for six possessions while the MSB offense scored three times in a row to close the margin to a more respectable 36-27.
The second half saw NTC start off strong going up 41-30 after scoring on four of their first five possessions. MSB scored on five straight possessions in about two minutes on a 12-0 run. Boylan had five of those points for MSB. MSB pulled out to a 55-50 lead with 8:30 left. That made the entire run sequence 25-9 to turn the game around. NTC wasn't finished yet. they closed to 70-67 after a three by Jenna Lillemoe. The next minute saw each team with five possessions and neither team was shining in the late game situation. MSB spent their time at the line, but was only 3/10. NTC went the 3 route with no second opportunities. The only time NTC scored was at the line.
