TEAM WISCONSIN SELECT 17S 74,
ALL IOWA ATTACK 61

Team WI Select used their balance and outside sniping to defeat the bigger hosts 74-61. In tournaments I have seen this year TWS17 have now won three, the most of any teams. One reason for the victories this weekend was the improvement of the role players in their stepped up performances. Their 3 point shooting helped the cause.

It didn't look like that at the start however. AIA went inside early and often as they scored on their first three possessions and built a 5-3 lead. TWS17 first scored from behind the arc as AIA played their zone. Katie Hackbart struck first for Wisconsin, the first of seven 3s in the first half (9 for the game). Wisconsin tied the game at five. Iowa pushed the lead out to 13-7 after a 8-2 urn. Ally Jensen had four points in the outburst. Then Iowa went into a nine possession drought, four of which were turnovers. In the mean time Wisconsin took advantage with an 11-0 run with three 3s in the equation. Briana Radowicz had two of the rainbows for TWS17. Iowa did cut the margin with four straight points by Zimmerman. The game remained tight until late in the half when another flurry of 3s rained down for TWS17. Kaylee Cardinal delivered two straight 3s to push a 23-21 lead to 29-21. TWS17 rode that momentum to a 33-26 halftime lead. Here was a key difference: for AIA Zimmerman and Chelsea Poppens combined for 20 points; TWS17 had five players with five points or more. For the game AIA had four players north of five.

AIA came out revved up in the second half. They opened the half with a 5/7 offensive sequence. But they only shaved two points off the deficit. TWS17 also came out hot with the first three possessions dropping for scores. Hackbart again struck from behind the arc to get things rolling for Wisconsin. The contest stayed in the neighborhood of ten to five points. TWS17 closed the deal with a 6/7 offensive sequence after AIA closed to 57-52. The 13-7 run made the outcome inevitable. A steal by Hannah Quilling made it 70-59 with about 2 minutes left.
