this game took place on Saturday, June 23
Rogers Breakdown Summer Showcase
White Championship
BARNUM bombers 50, PIERZ pioneers 36

The small school Barnum Bombers were bombers as they hit for seven 3s in defeating Pierz 50-36 in the Rogers Breakdown Summer Showcase. The format was to place teams with like student population together. So the white division was small. Also the clock was running the entire time. That is why you will see lower scoring games.

Summer ball is a chance to experiment and see how life will be like after the last class graduates. Barnum found out life will be all right despite having Colleen McKay graduate. Replacing her on the inside will be the job of Megan Myhre. She has been a 3 point shooter in the past few years, but definitely has the frame and knack for scoring inside. Pulling the triggers on the 3s looks like the responsibility of Jaimee Wickstrom and Katie Myhre, Megan's sister. Wickstrom hit for five 3s on the day, Katie Myhre had two. Another Myhre sister--Sarah--also started for Barnum. Barnum still is not at full strength with Katie Newman still recovering from her knee injury. She will be back for the start of the season.

Pierz also had a player out due to injury: Kayla Kapsner. Also during the game Pierz lost Gabrielle Boser to an ankle injury. Before she left the contest she had six points and was clicking at 200 pp100--well above the gold standard.

Early on in the first half, Pierz had a 4/5 offensive sequence and led 10-9. Boser had all six of her points in that stretch. Barnum had a 5-0 run to pull in front 14-10. Barnum still led 19-18 when they fell into a seven possession drought to finish the half. Megan Myhre was on the bench during this time. Pierz took advantage of her abssence, went on a 6-0 run and led 24-19 at the half.

Pierz led 34-28 with 12:31 left in the game. They would only manage to score one more field goal. Barnum went on a 9/11 scoring sequence after that on a 22-2 run to take a 50-36. Wickstrom had three of her 3s in the burst. Megan Myhre had 14 of her points in the second half. Pierz finished with an 11 possession drought.

Photos: #1 an unknown Pierz player goes up for a lay up. Part of the problem with summer leagues and tournament is that teams fail to have great uniforms. Either the numbers are way too high (78 anyone?), only on one side, lacking entirely, or you need a microscope to read them. #2 Katie Myhre fires off a three while one Pierz player draws attention to a problem of a teammate.
