this game took place on Sunday, June 24
Adidas Midwest Classic
Ames, Iowa
15U Championship
ALL IOWA ATTACK 65, ILLINOIS WOLVERINES 55 OT

This championship game had the most drama and was the only contest that the hosts claimed victory. Illinois broke free from an 11 all tie to go up 18-13. AIA then ripped off seven straight scores on a 14-2 run to lead 27-20. The mysterious Cassie? had four points (#41). Maybe she is Brazilian and goes by one name. AIA led at half 31-22.

AIA continued to build and add to their lead. Their biggest margin came at 45-32 with about 8 minutes left. A quick flurry of activity by IW on a 9-0 run cut that margin to four 45-41. IW was 4/5 in their offensive series at this stretch with Hayley Stercic providing five of those points. With 3:41 IW tied it on a drive by Mercedes Griffin. AIA scored on four straight possessions, but the only managed to get six points because they missed a couple of free throws. Nevertheless the host team was up 53-47. On IW's next possession they drilled a three. The missed free throw bug bit AIA again and Griffin for IW scored on a drive to make it 53-52 AIA. Under a minute left #11 made one free throw to tie it at 53. IW then went ahead for the first time since the massive first half drought with a bucket by Griffin. Cassie (#41) answered on the next AIA possession and the game was tied at 55 and headed to overtime.

In overtime it was all AIA. They scored 5/6 times in the two minute extra session. Ellen Hansen broke the ice with a pair of free throws and then Addy Bates scored on the next AIA possession on a put back. On the last AIA possession the IW bench was assessed a technical. Hansen scored a free throw and Hannah Beeler added a put back for the icing on the cake. AIA had the victory 65-55.
