Rogers Breakdown Summer Showcase
Gold Bracket Championship
ROGERS royals 46, CHASKA hawks 43

Rogers made it two for the Mississippi 8 conference with their dramatic win over Chaska in the Gold Bracket. St. Michael-Albertville won the Blue Bracket.

Rogers went to a team camp at the University of Montana in Missoula. They finished second to a team from Missoula Big Sky. It was a sudden death overtime loss to a team with 6-5 Joslyn Tinkle. That experience pulled them over the finish line.

Chaska was a team full of guards as their bigger post players had previous commitments. Not only was Chaska limited to guards, but they only had six bodies.

Rogers got out of the gates fast with four straight scores and a 9-6 lead. The Royals continued their hot streak and held an advantage with a 19-11 lead. It looked like that trend was going to continue, but Chaska had other ideas and roared back with a 10-4 finish in the first half to make it 23-21 Rogers. Courtney Boylan had 12 points by half to lead Chaska. Jennifer Dowd led Rogers with 8.

Rogers again came out revved up with a 7-3 start to the half on four straight scores. That pushed the lead to 30-24. Chaska delivered seven 3s on the night to keep Rogers within sight. That six point margin was maintained until 36-30. Then Rogers went into a five possession drought and Chaska used the magic 3 ball in one form or another to go up 39-36. Brooke Brown started the run off with a 3, then Boylan joined her in 3 land. Brown then scored on a drive &1 for the offensive burst. In fact in the second half the only scoring for Chaska came from Brown and Boylan. Chaska enjoyed a 41-37 lead when Rogers started their comeback. Amanda Chesness started the comeback with a post up on a pass from Casey Mann. Rogers slapped a full court press on that caused some headaches. Mann stole the ball and converted the lay up to tie it up at 41. Chaska got down court and Brooke Brown was fouled and delivered both tosses to put the Hawks up once again. On the next Rogers possession Camille Laughlin made one free throw to cut the margin to 43-42. Boylan was sent to the line at the other end, but did convert either. Chesness rebounded and Rogers patiently and methodically worked the ball around. Dowd found an opening at the top of the key and nailed the shot to go up 45-43 with 30 seconds left. Sam Santjer tried a shot for Chaska and Chesness picked up the board again. Heather Brunn got fouled and made one for the final margin.

Chaska 43, 43, 100.0, .395
made 3s: Chaska 6, Rogers 1
made fts: Rogers 11, Chaska 7
Bench: Rogers 5, Chaska 3
Rogers had a very high .581 floor %. That should have translated into a higher pp100, but with 10 missed free throws that kept their pp100 to a 107. Theoretically the pp100 should have been in the neighborhood of 120.9.
Chaska too had issues at the line. They missed four. Their bigger issues were with the lack of options, or lack of support other than Boylan and Brown.
Both teams used zones often.
