Draxten Verbals, Big 10 8-0 in Sunday Action

DRAXTEN VERBALS
Hannah Draxten, Fergus Falls has made a verbal to Iowa. She is the 5th MN player to make a verbal from the 2008 class. Draxten averaged 20.8 ppg for the 22-5 team last year. She played her summer ball with North Tartan. From Craig Olson sports.

BIG 10
The Big 10 was 8-0 yesterday in non-con action. The tightest win was Indiana's 54-51 upset win over Kentucky, but the rest were all beyond 10 point wins.

Illinois beat Butler 65-47. 2006 Miss MN Basketball Jenna Smith from Bloomington Kennedy had 10 points off the bench.

Indiana upset #15 Kentucky 54-51 to win the Women's Sports Foundation Classic in Lexington.

Iowa beat Kansas 63-49 in the WBCA classic in Kansas City. More in the Des Moines Register and in the Daily Iowan, the campus paper. Iowa's Megan Skouby was MVP of the tourney.

#17 Michigan State beat Ferris State 68-47 and 6-9 Alyssa DeHaan swatted away 8 shots. From the State News, the campus paper. Also the Detroit Free Press has a story. WILX has a written copy of their broadcast, but I didn't see a video clip.

Northwestern rambled over neighbor Chicago Loyola 78-60. Former Breck player Melissa Miller had 6 for NW.

#7 Ohio State rolled over Army 77-41 in the Maggie Dixon classic named for the former Army coach that died last year unexpectedly after leading Army to the NCAA tournament. From the Pioneer Press.

Penn State dropped Syracuse 71-46

#11 Purdue finished off Hartford 81-51 in the second round of the preseason WNIT.

Former Mpls North star Mia Johnson, who transferred from St. Louis to Michigan State, is a starter and showing her versatilitly for the Spartans. also from the State News.

Northwestern added Meisha Reed, Stockbridge, GA to make four recruits for the 2007-08 season. Also signing were Amy Jaeschke, New Trier, IL; Savannah Stedman, Ortonville Brandon, MI; and Shantina Boyd, Bollingbrook, IL.

#1 Maryland shook off the first game blahs and played like a national champion in a 99-43 shellacking of George Mason
#3 Oklahoma hit the century mark in a 105-71 win over #20 DePaul.
#5 Tennessee also was also north of the century with a 102-72 drubbing of Chattanooga. Candace Parker had a dunk in the contest. From CBS Sportsline.

#25 Texas powered past Maryland Eastern Shore 78-55

South Dakota State had to postpone it's opener against Kent State due to flight delay from Chicago and other events scheduled for Kent State over the weekend. SDSU will now open at Middle Tennessee State tonight. No word on make up date.

NAIA
Mayville State beat Briar Cliff 67-40 on Friday and then beat Dordt 90-61 on Saturday.

Mayville State Improves to 4-1
The Mayville State Women’s Basketball Team concluded the weekend sweep in Madison, South Dakota, by defeating the Dordt College Lady Defenders by the score of 90-61. With the win the Comets improve to 4-1 overall on the season. The Comets came out sluggish at the beginning of the game and fell behind early 7-2, but then went on a 14-4 run to take a 16-11 lead with 13:00 left in the first half. The Comets built that lead to 44-31 at the intermission break. The Comets came out for the second half and quickly asserted themselves and had 68-47 lead with 10:00 to go in the second half. The Comets then went a 22-13 run the final ten minutes of the game for the final score of 90-61. The Comets shot 50.8% from the floor for the game, but still continue to struggle with turnovers, as they turned it over 25 times for the game. Mayville State had five players finish in double figures for the game. The Comets were led in scoring by Cassie Leraas with 22 points (5 for 9 shooting from the three point line), Kelly Latozke with 15 points, Laura BigCrow with 13 points, Michelle Halvorson 12 points, and Nikki Munneke with 11 points. Michelle Halvorson also contributed with 8 assists for the game. Kelly Latozke led the Comets in rebounding with 8. The Comets next game will be Wednesday evening, as they will play at home against Southwest Minnesota State University, as Division II school out of Marshall, MN. Then next weekend they will travel to Minneapolis to play in a Tournament at Northwestern College. They will play Judson College on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Judson College is currently ranked #20 in the country in NAIA Women’s Basketball
