HUDSON TURKEY CLASSIC
HOLY ANGELS stars 60, BLAINE bengals 54

There was no flow in this game that saw 47 free throws made. Every 10 seconds on average I was listening to a whistle symphony. Physical play, but bodies out of control on defense, resulted in 48 fouls called. I don't like watching a free throw parade, but one broke out in this game.

Again it was a slow starter with Blaine connecting on a Heather Gillund basket and one, but that was the only score in the first 12 possessions by either team. Of course I realize it is early in the year and teams aren't fine oiled machines....yet. But the stoppages of play were herky jerky and the knocks and pings in the engine were sputtering for both teams. Holy Angels took control with a 9-0 run in the quarter with Slawson getting things rolling. Slawson had 6 of the 13 for the quarter. In the first quarter Holy Angels led 13-6, but their pp100 for the quarter would be 56.5; Blaine's was even lower at 27.3.

The second quarter was much better for offensive efficiency, but the whistles were still tooting. In the quarter Holy Angels pushed the lead at 19-9. Then Blaine had their own run at 11-0. The Bengals actually took the lead at 22-21 with a transition lay up by Alyssa Harnes off a rebound by Jackie Kelly. Holy Angels retook the lead due to Mary O'Brien's actions. She scored seven points in the last four possessions on a put back, a transition lay up, one free throw, and a back cut. That closed the half with Holy Angels up 30-26.

Blaine spent the rest of the night trying to climb back up that mountain. But still the whistle symphony blared on with stoppages at 6:31; 6:22; 6:20; 6:11; 6:04.... Blaine was able to pull to 37-35 with a Kelly three from the top of the key. Emily Backes hit her own 3 on the right wing for HA and it was soon back up to seven points. Blaine did close with a 5-0 run to make it 44-41.

The fourth quarter was a true ft paraders paradise with only one field goal scored by HA out of the 16 points, Blaine found the range for three field goals in the quarter. The game remained at six most of the quarter. Kelly scored a transition lay up off a HA miss to make it 55-52 with 47.1 seconds left. But HA made free throws on three of their next four possessions.

TRENCH PLAYER
Even though she fouled out of the game Mary O'Brien for being consistent on offense and in the right spot at the right time on offense.

BY THE NUMBERS
Holy Angels 60, 80, 75.0, .400
Blaine 56, 82, 68.3, .341
Terrible first quarter dampened their numbers. free throw parades have no flow. Both teams played extremely hard the whole court. both teams worked both sides of the floor on offense. They just couldn't hang on to it, or finish once they launched.
