Minnesota AAU State Tournament

16u Quarterfinals
METRO STARS BLACK 65, MN STARS BOROWICZ 63, OT

In the second quarterfinals it was a match up between two teams with similar initials (MSB) and close seeds #4 Borowicz and #5 Black. The similarities came right down to the score. In overtime Black got revenge for a loss at Forest Lake 65-63.

Borowicz got out of the gate strong and fast with a 19-6 lead after their first 10 possessions. Borowicz started the game 9/10. Brittany Chambers led the charge with six points. The biggest Borowicz lead came at 30-16 with 9:28 in the half. That was after 18 Borowicz possessions. Prorated out the pp100 would come to 166.7 pp100. That pace could not, and did not last. Borowicz was held scoreless for 8 straight possessions, and a 1/14 sequence. That opened the door back up for Black and they took advantage with a 14-3 run. Tina Fisher had four of the points. Both teams executed at the end of the half with a combined five straight scores between them. A Laura Weber finished scoring for Black and it was 37-34 Borowicz at the half.

At half time Brittany Chambers departed for Jordan. She had a music event which was graded and could not be missed. That is what spring ball is all about--dancing around all sorts of different conflicts and obligations. With Chambers out of the way the Borowicz offense and defense struggled to get their smooth flow they enjoyed in the first half. Black tied it at 41 but Borowicz pushed it back to 46-41 after a Colleen Doerr trey. Black went on a 10-0 run after that to take a 51-46 lead. Borowicz went into a 10 possession drought that was almost fatal. Deena Ewert and Alia Cook had a field goal and two free throws respectively to cut the margin to 51-50 Black. DaNae Moore scored on a drive to make it 53-50. Kate Thompson canned two free throws and the Doerr put Borowicz back up with an assist from Thompson. Adrea Holler tied it with one out of two free throws at 54 with under 30 seconds left. Neither team could find the bottom of the net in their last two possessions. On to overtime.

Carolyn Dienhart took over in the extra session. She started Black's scoring with two free throws on the first OT possession. Doerr tied the game at 56. Dienhart answered with a drive. Sarah Hintz hit a free throw, but missed the second for a one point advantage for Black. Dienhart was fouled and she again canned both for a 60-57 lead. On the next Black possession Dienart found Fisher for a lay up and a 62-57 lead. Borowicz was stopped again and Black was in a delay game when Dietel stole the ball and got the "&1" on the ensuing lay up to make it 62-60. Boylan made two free throws for a 64-60 lead. Thompson drained one from down town to make it 64-63. Boylan went to the line again, but only made the second toss. Borowicz had one last crack, but the Black defense took away their first options and Alia Cook was forced to take a three, something she normally doesn't shoot. Black had the revenge. Borowicz's rematch with North Tartan Larson would have to await a future time.

The photos are not exactly the clearest. I am still trying to get my barings set, but
Photo #1: Kate Thompson, Borowicz collides with Boylan, Black.
Photo #2: Tina Fisher, Black tries to get in front on defense against Cook, Borowicz.
