THORPE'S SOAP BOX
Coach Thorpe is responding to the article about "Is basketball getting better?" a look at the decline in points scored in HS ball in MN since 1997.

He also would like to point out Hana Peljto from Osseo was part of the 2000 class (the second best class to come out of MN). Peljto led Osseo to the AAAA state title in 2000, went to Harvard, was first team Ivy League four years, player of the year twice, won the WBCA scholarship award in 2004, averaged 20.2 points for her collegiate career, and now plays at Cavigal Nice in France's Professional league and averages 12.3

"When I started coaching kids would look forward to open gym. In the twilight of my career the gym rats were few and far between. The majority wanted to show up only if there was going to be a band, cheerleaders, cable tv, and trophies being handed out to everyone.
"I have most of my trophies still, but some of them I tied together to make an anchor.
"The problem I have is with families spending big bucks and going to tournaments all summer. I often wondered about the other kids in the family. What if the other siblings weren't jocks. They spend their entire summer watching their siblings getting trophies.
"Doesn't that send them a message?"
