Out & About: Holy Angels/Orono

#3 posting 2.23.2006

Holy Angels 75, Orono 61

Holy Angels has been on a roll and they continued that roll at Orono Thursday. They now have won 14 in a row . I saw them early in the year when they had some bugs in the system. Those bugs are gone. They are playing with confidence and authority. They are averaging 72.7 since the new year, with a margin of 24.4. They will be a force to reckoned with in 3AAA.

Orono started off with the lead as Danielle Borg scored on a put back of a missed 3. In fact in the first three possessions (2 by HA and 1 by Orono) there were five missed 3s. Orono missed one, and HA missed four. You might be asking: How can you miss four 3s in two possessions? In Holy Angels' 2nd possession they missed three 3s. They got the rebound twice to keep their possession alive, but never connected. It did not matter. HA played their pace throughout the game. Orono either held the lead or was tied up to 15-13. Borg scored the first six points for Orono, twice on rebounds, once off a press lay up. Jessica Miller hit a three from the right corner to give HA the lead for the first time and they never relinquished it the rest of the night. This was in the middle of a six possession string of scores for HA as they went on a 13-2 run for a HA 22-15 lead. Orono scored six in a row to cut it to 22-21 but that was as close as it was going to be. HA had a 0/8 drought during this period. They regained their offensive eye and soon pushed the lead back out to 31-23. HA led at half 35-30.

In the second half Megan Milusenic made two free throws to close the gap to 35-32, but HA had too much fire power, too much quickness to be challenged. Miller dropped a 3 right after Milusenic made her free throws for a 38-32 lead. After the initial flury of the second half HA led 44-36. In the next flury HA added to their lead with a 10-5 run and 54-41 lead. Maggie Slawson made a three during this stretch and in doing so passed the 1000 point mark for her career. That was the first of two 3s in a row for HA as Miller on the next possession fired one in from the left side. Before Slawson's three, Orono had cut the lead to 46-41. There was no real drama the rest of the way. HA put together a 5/6 possession string with Miller scoring six points in a 10-0 string and 74-50 lead. HA then put in the deep bench with 2 minutes to go. Orono's bench beat HA's bench with an 11-1 run and 5/6 possession string to finish the game.

Height Matters: Orono 5-10, Holy Angels 5-9.8
Department of Defense: both teams preferred 2/3 in the half court, but HA pressed with 1/2/1/1 and they also used 1/2/2 trap in 3/4 court. HA likes the double team

Jessica Miller 33, 22, 150.0, .636 quick, aggressive, plays with confidence, authority and players feed off that. Has awareness of where she is on the floor. Made sure her feet were behind the 3 line on a shot attempt. It was good. knows where her teammates are and what they are capable of. great body control. deceptive passer. RF: it would be nit picky
Maggie Slawson 16, 12, 133.3, .667 another player that has improved from the first time I saw her this year. Moving with much more purpose instead of going through the motions. has range, can drive and pull up. RF: foul issues which may be foot related.

BY THE NUMBERS
Holy Angels 75, 76, 98.7, .474
Orono 61, 75, 81.3, .413
Bench: Orono 19, Holy Angels 8
Made Free throws: Orono 23, HA 16
As you can see Orono had more made free throws. That may be a vulnerability in the post season for HA. They were not really in foul trouble since they use quite a few players. But the starters are their main point producers.
Most of the Orono turnovers took place by trying to pass to a greater distance. In other words shorten the pass. That means the receivers better come to the ball, and it means the dribbler better not eat the dribble without three options available.
