Out & About: Washburn/North

#3 posting 2.9.2006

My second Overtime in a row, North's third

Washburn 68, North 65

For the third straight game Mpls North played an overtime game and lost. Woodbury, Southwest, and now Washburn have gone an extra session and have come away with a win. But a bit of a background check. North started the season with three players transfering to other schools and Maurika Carlisle, their all state point guard, going down for the year with an ACL injury. Their first 10 games North offense averaged 45.2, and their game margin was -15.1. In their last 11 games the offense has improved to 60.3 and their margin has increased to 2.3. They are closing fast, but their streak of making the State tournament, right now at nine years, is in danger of stopping. They need to learn to put teams away when they have a chance. They have one month.

North started out with a basket right on the first possession as Nadvia Davis scored on a jumper from the right side. They led at 9-2 when Washburn took a time out at 13:59. The Millers then went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. Jennifer Castillo gave Washburn their first lead at 10-9. North at this point was going through 0/10 possession drought. Seven of those possessions were miss fires from deep; three were turnovers. In the middle of the half both teams traded leads three times each. Europe Guy scored on a pass from a driving Chandria Benion to give North a 17-16 lead. That started 15-4 North run to close the half. North went to the locker room up 30-20.

As in the first half, North scored on the first possession and held a 12 point lead 32-20. Then Washburn took off on a 14-2 run. Liz Shay scored the last five in that run including a three from up top to tie the score at 34. Benion gave the lead back to North on a pass from Riley. North then zipped to a 13-5 run. Leading the charge at this point was Guy and Riley as they combined for nine points. North then shut down on the scoring end their next 7 possessions. Washburn took advantage for a 7-0 run led by Thomas with four points. The game was tied at 52 and 54. North broke free with a Davis basket, and two possessions later a Riley basket. She was fouled on the basket, but missed the free throw. Davis added two free throws with 2:17 left and North led 60-54. Washburn scored on their next three possessions. 8th grader Alex Shuford, who entered the game after Morgan Soloman fouled out, hit a shot from the right side, Viehauser cashed a shot from the high post, and Thomas made two free throws with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 60. Jesscia Ray lost the ball for North, but Thomas had a turnover to end the regulation portion of the game.

In overtime, North again scored on the first possession as Riley continued their trend. Asberry added a layup as Viehauser was stripped. North led 64-60. That was the point when Patrice Thomas took over. She scored the next four possessions for Washburn. She scored on a baseline drive from the left side, two cherry picking lay ups after missed North shots, and after Davis made one free throw to cut the Washburn lead to 66-65, grabbed the second missed free throw, worked the ball around, and scored on an out of bounds play from the right side of the court on a back screen to the left block for a margin 68-65. There were 8 seconds left in OT as this happened. North came down but Benion threw the ball to high and the ball sailed out of bounds. Liz Shay added one free throw, the first non Thomas point in overtime for Washburn.

Height Matters: Washburn 5-10, North 5-8.8
Department of defense: Both teams played 2/3 zones. both teams used some full court pressing.
