TOURNAMENT ALERT
MN JUCO State Tournament
@ Ridgewater CC, Wilmar F24, 25, 26
JUCO ball doesn't get a lot of attention. We will try to rectify that. At this point I plan on attending Friday's contests in Willmar.
Games
1 pm Hibbing vs Minneapolis
3 pm Mesabi Range vs Rochester
6 pm Rainy River vs Ridgewater
8 pm Itasca vs MN West
Itasca is the #1 team from the North Division, Minneapolis is #1 in the South
Minneapolis has the #1 overall, with #2 going to Ridgewater

Looking at the rosters and what class do the players come from
Hibbing: 1 AA, 7A
Itasca: 3AAA, 4AA, 2A
Mesabi: 1AAAA, 5AAA, 3AA, 2 A
Minneapolis: 2AAAA; 6 AAA
MN West: 4AAA; 2AA, 4A
Rainy River: 4AAAA; 4AAA; 4A
Ridgewater: 1AAA; 7AA; 3A
Rochester: 3AAAA; 1AAA; 6AA

How about the players?

The top scorer coming into the tournament is Gabriella Gustafson of Minneapolis. She played her HS ball at St. Louis Park. She averaged 15.0 in HS and this year averaged 20.9. Her rating is a 1.39 meaning one point in HS equals 1.39 in JUCO.

Krista Beek, now at MN West, played her HS ball at Murray County Central. Her points in HS came to 13.3 and she is averaging 20.5 coming into the tournament. Her rating is 1.54.

The other 20 point scorer is Rebekah Fitzgerald of Rochester. She played at Faribault in HS. Again we have a better than 1 to 1 ratio as she averaged 17.1 her last year in HS and is averaging 20.1 coming into the tournament. That breaks down to a 1.18 ratio.

Why do some of these players score more in JUCO?
First there are 8 more minutes played (32 in HS for these players, 40 in JUCO).
There is a shot clock as well to speed things up.
There may be other reasons but these leap out.

Sorry this is late, but I picked up my wife at the airport and that threw the scheduled time off. She left right at the artic blast on Friday on a trip to Mexico.
