Out & About Twofer: Outstate Visitors

#3 posting 2.4.2006

Today outstate MN came to the metro with Grand Rapids playing at Hopkins in a matinee and Winona Cotter traveling to Minnehaha for the night cap.

Hopkins 59, Grand Rapids 37

Hopkins led from start to finish in a matchup with a northern AAA school on Saturday afternoon. They were more aggressive by attacking the basket early and often and were in the bonus at 13:17 of the first half. Hopkins was up 15-0 before GR's post Katie McBride scored with 13:45 to go in the first half. The Royal's best possession string occurred early in the first half when they were 6/7 at one point. Tiana Wilkinson delivered six of those points with a steal, layup and one; a standard foul with one free throw; and a put back of a Schurle miss.
GR opened with a 0/10 possession string. Of those 10 possessions 7 were turnovers. Even when GR was not turning it over they were not getting the type of shot they wanted. They were forced to take a couple of 3s when nothing else was available. Hopkins had another string of 4/5 possessions, including two on a GR bench technical. Again Hopkins closed the half with a 6/7 string. Most of these points were in the paint or at the line. GR finished the half 0/5. The score at half was a commanding 39-11.

Everybody got a chance to play in the second half as one would expect in a blow out win. Hopkins opened the half with a 4/5 string while GR put together two possessions before going dry for seven. The turnover bug was still biting GR as they had four during that streak, all of them fumbling either dribbling or not catching the ball. Hopkins' starters were sitting down, done for the day when the score was 48-17. GR outscored Hopkins the rest of the way 20-11. Very late in the contest GR had a 4/5 possession string. Also Hopkins made the bonus extremely late in the second half--with 54.3 seconds left in the game.

Height matters: Hopkins 5-9.4, Grand Rapids 5-9
Department of Defense: Hopkins man with full court trapping; GR man

Game #2 Winona Cotter 73, Minnehaha 38

This game was somewhat similar to the first in that it was a blow out. The difference was it the outstate team provided the fire works. Cotter took over right from their first possession as Jenny Gilbertson scored the first two times WC had the ball. Cotter put the heat on with their press which cause too many problems for the Minnehaha ball handlers. Minnehaha started the game 0/10 on their possessions--nine of which ended in turnovers. Ani Johnson finally broke the scoring drought with a three. Cotter's sharpness and quickness with their passing resulted in an avalanche of points. They like it fast and furious and Minnehaha got caught in that pace. Cotter had a string of 4/5 possessions where they connected. They never had long consecutive scoring possessions however. WC's biggest lead was at half at 28 points 42-14.
Minnehaha seemed a little more coherent on offense in the second half as they scored their first two possessions, but the damage was done. Cotter's lead ballooned out to 73-31 with 5:09 left. After the subbing Minnehaha went on a 7-0 run. There was not much drama in this game. But a lot of MA turnovers and WC sprinting down court and converting.
