Out & About: Madelia/LCWM

#5 posting 2.12.2006

Madelia 55, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 45

69 fouls, 9 players foul out. I was not interested in seeing a foul filled butcher fest, but that is what I got. I like a point parade as much as anyone, but I do not like to see it at the free throw line.

These teams were quicker and better ball handlers than game #1. But they still were not quick enough to avoid fouling. LCWM led early at 3-1. Madelia took a 7-4 lead, but LCWM put together a 3 possession string, but only squeezed four points out of it. That was going to be a problem for both teams. They each could not convert the free throws that were raining down on them. (see by the numbers). LCWM was close to 50% from the line all day. Amber Hohenstein put together a five point string to break a 10 all tie. LCWM had their biggest lead a 21-14. Both teams' offense featured drives to the basket. LCWM led at half 30-25.

The second half saw even less effective offense. LCWM started off the half 0/7. But Madelia only converted once to cut the lead 30-28. Madelia shook off their offensive doldrums and went on a five possession run. It started when Melissa Tatro hit a three from the top. Madelia went on a 10-0 run. Tatro had 9 points on this run and Madelia had a lead of 38-32, a lead they would not give up. LCWM had a four possession string when the score was 40-34, but all the points came at the line, and when you shoot 50% that means only four points were cashed in. Madelia still had a 42-39 lead. Erica Roelofs, LCWM scored on a steal and lay up to tie the game at 44. Madelia was on a 1/8 possession string to allow LCWM the opportunity to work their way back in the game. Also three players fouled out for Madelia during this time--Hintz, Pace, and Stensland. Madelia finished better howerver with a 11-1 run to end the game. Tatro made two free throws to start the run.

Height matters: LCWM 5-8.6; Madelia 5-6.8
Department of Defense: Madelia man, full court 1/2/1/1, 2/2/1; LCWM man
Bonus: Madelia in bonus in the first half at 11:59; second half 9:52
LCWM: first half 12:03; second half 8:00

If you take a look at the starters all were sub 40 points per 100 except Young. Their floor % were even worse with no one cracking .333. Everyone gets a red flag for offensive skills. I did like their athleticism. It should be noted they are all non-seniors.
