Out & About: Burnsville/Lakeville North

#3 posting 1.31.2006

Burnsville 70, Lakeville North 61

This Lake conference battle went into overtime as Burnsville battled back at home to beat Lakeville North. LN won the first meeting back on D9 51-42.
Both teams scored on their first possession. Then each team turned it over two times in a row, then they each missed on a 3. Abby Rittenhouse scored Burnsville's first 8 points. LN had better balance and held the lead at 14-8. But Rittenhouse picked up second foul very early when the scored was 6-4 LN. After LN scored on three straight possessions, she came back in and she added the next four points. Later in the half LN scored on five straight possessions. Cassie Rochel and Katy Sanders each provided four points on that 10-3 run. LN led at this point 27-18. Then it was Burnsville's turn for a five possession scoring spree. Burnsville's back up post Caitlyn Van Bokern contributed four straight points during this 7-2 run. Kelli Hilt hit LN's only 3 in the first half from the top left side and Callie Mansour of Burnsville answered two possessions later with a 3 from the right side to cut LN's lead to 32-28 at half.

Burnsville scored on their first two possessions in the second half to take their first lead at 33-32. Danielle Dove provided the 3 to give the Blaze the lead. Sanders regained the lead for LN with a baseline shot on the right side. Rittenhouse picked up her 4th foul around 10 minutes to go in the second half, and the perimeter game of Burnsville picked up the slack. Kelsey Marcks cut the LN lead to 39-38 with a 3 from the right side. It was her only points of the night. Right away for LN Katie Sheets made a 3 to give LN a four point cushion 42-38. Rittenhouse returned with 8:16 to go, but it was a yo-yo type entrance as she would return to the bench on defensive situations.

LN held it's biggest lead in the second half at 45-40 on Shayla Owodunni post up. Mansour knocked down a 3 for Burnsville and Owodunni scored from the left baseline for a LN lead of 47-43. Then Burnsville scored on four straight possessions with Mansour delivering five and Sarah Wiens providing five. This 10-3 run ended with a Wiens three from the left side and Burnsville was up 53-50. Kelli Hilt of LN made one free throw to cut the lead to two with 1:36 left. At this point Burnsville went into a three possession drought with two turnovers and one missed shot. Kaiya Sygulla cashed in two free throws to tie the game with 14 seconds left. Burnsville threw the ball away on the press and LN had a chance with 10.2 seconds left. Cassie Rochel had the last shot for LN but it bounced off and Rittenhouse grabbed the rebound to send the game into an extra session tied at 53.

LN won the tip, but Owodunni missed two free throws. Burnsville's Dove hit a 3 from up top and to give the lead to the Blaze for keeps. That started a six straight possession scoring string for the Blaze. Sanders answered Dove's three to trail by one. Rittenhouse got the ball from up top and she made a fake and scored to go back up by three. Sygulla scored on a deep two pointer to bring the game back to one. Rittenhouse made one free throw and Wiens grabbed the miss off the second. Keeping the ball, the Blaze worked it around. Mansour was fouled and converted both free throws, so Burnsville scored three points on that possession and led 61-57. LN then started rushing shots. At that point LN was playing catch up. Wiens finished off the game with two free throws for a 70-61 victory.

Height Matters: Burnsville 5-10.6, Lakeville North 5-8.4
Department of Defense: Both teams pressed at various times. In the half court LN was man. Burnsville started man, played mainly 2/3 the rest of the night, also some 1/3/1

Burnsville Player evaluations
Starters
Sarah Wiens 16, 18, 88.9, .389 lefty, good size on the perimeter. scorers mentality. RF: needs better understanding of shot selection when ahead late in the game.
Erica Andreasen 4, 3, 133.3, .667 another big perimeter player. point guard,
Callie Mansour 15, 12, 125.0, .500 very effective in the second half. big perimeter player. nice shot, made three 3s on the night. season high point total, and tied career high. RF: this is nit picky, but missed a chance to get the three point play with a missed free throw.
Danielle Dove 10, 8, 125.0, .625 yet another big perimeter player (do they all come from the same template?) Drives and can shoot the three. RF: passing/decision making
Abby Rittenhouse 14, 11, 127.3, .727 extremely quick moves inside. Got LN defense off their feet with fakes. lefty. Can also score from outside the lane with range about 10 feet. energetic. held ground and picked up a charge when dancing with too many fouls. RF: picked up fouls and sat down just as quickly. has a tendancy to be out of control, but I think that can be tempered.
Bench
Rachael Moen 2, 8, 25.0, .250 point guard. handled ball well for 8th grader. Decent size, decent ball handling. RF: needs to shorten passes. Decision making.
Caitlyn Van Bokern 6, 4, 150.0, .750 good reserve post with size. would be a starter on many, many teams that I have seen this year. RF: not as explosvie or quick as Rittenhouse
Kelsey Marcks 3, 3, 100.0, .333 Perimeter with size, cut right from the same cloth as the rest of Burnsville's perimeters.

Lakeville North Player evaluations
Starters
Katie Sheets 7, 9, 77.8, .333 strong defender. quick. RF: needs to be consistent from the field
Kaiya Sygulla 9, 10, 90.0, .500 point guard, aggressive. looked to penetrate the zone. RF: ball handling, decisions
Kelli Hilt 8, 12, 66.7, .417 moves with out ball, flash cut basket., RF: more consistent 3s
Katy Sanders 16, 12, 133.3, .667 very accurate baseline shooter. smooth. tough kid. got knocked down and bounced up. RF: not much to say
Cassie Rochel 9, 9, 100.0, .556 8th grader is starting now. nice hands, nice feet. can jump and has instincts where to be positioned. got down on the floor for loose balls twice. many kids won't do that no matter what their height. RF: defense, (can't block every shot) and need to get stronger.
Bench
Shayla Owodunni 10, 10, 100.0, .500 one of the most improved players I have seen the second time around. An athlete that is still learning the ins and outs of the game. nice touch, good hands and feet. she still will get better. RF: still learning. got tired and form on free throw deteriorated as night went on. stronger perimeter passing.
Cassie Crego 0, 2, 0.0, .000 defensive player. RF: need to contribute some offense
Jenna Lewis 2, 4, 50.0, .250 strong frame. RF: not as tall or athletic as other posts on LN
Trench Player: Abby Rittenhouse, even if she only played a portion of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
team, points, possessions, pp100, scoring %
Burnsville 70, 67, 104.5, .493
Lakeville North 61, 68, 89.7, .471
Remember this game went an extra four minutes. So the Possessions would be more like 60.3 for a 36 minute game. And that fits as LN was quite deliberate as they had one possession in the second half with 29 touches.
Bench: Burnsville 11, LN 12
Made FT: Burnsville 20, LN 12
3s: Burnsville 8, LN 2
I see why Burnsville took Bloomington Kennedy to OT back on J6--it is they match up fairly well with their size. This is another interesting team in 6AAAA. Kennedy, South, Eastview, Apple Valley, Burnsville, and Southwest. This section will be bloody.

DEFINITIONS
Possessions=the end result is measured. Only four things can happen. Either the player scores or misses a FG or FT, or turns it over. Sally may shoot and miss, but if her team rebounds it does not count as a possession for her. Only the termination of possession matters in this system.

PP100=What a player would average if they had 100 possessions. 1 point for 1 possessions would get a player 100.0. In theory a player could shoot once and hit a three. They would then have a pp100 rating of 300.0. That is why one should look at possessions and not get flamfoozeled by a high pp100 rating. A low pp100 means the player misses too many shots or coughs it up too much.

Floor/scoring %=a player (or team's) scoring possessions divided by total possessions.
