Delano MYAS event
17 II Division
FRIDLEY tigers 46, HURRICANES 26

For a change I was there right from the start in this Early Bird tournament. This was a 17D2 match up between the school based Fridley Tigers and the Hurricanes from small Southwest Minnesota towns in the Tomahawk and Camden conferences. The Hurricanes are coached by Dale Bannerman of New Ulm. This contest reverted to running time as the Hurricanes turned the ball over 20 of 31 times in the first half.

Oddly enough it was the Hurricanes that struck first with LoRel Christensen scoring. Fridley didn't score until their 7th possession. After that it was easy to find the bottom of the basket for the Tigers. They scored on four straight possessions. Meanwhile the turnovers were taking their toll on the Hurricanes. They went through a 10 possession drought and saw a tie game at four mushroom to 18-4 deficit. At half time the Hurricanes crossed over to double digits but still trailed 25-11.

Again it was slow going at the start of the second half with only two scores in the first 14 possession combined. The Hurricanes did cut back on their turnovers with only 9 in the second stanza. Erin Green rattled off nine straight points for Fridley pushing their lead out to 37-18 with 7: 22 left. The margin didn't move very much off that mark as Fridley won 46-26.

Later in the day Fridley lost to the Urban Stars 65-50 in the 17D2 championship.

One thing I liked about the Hurricanes is their uniforms with the names on the back. It makes it much easier to track players that way. It is an extremely effective way to being remembered.
