CONCORDIA ST. PAUL SUMMER LEAGUE
HASTINGS raiders 4, SOUTH ST. PAUL packers 2
(13-19, 22-11, 25-19)
Hastings came back after losing the first round to South St. Paul to pick up four points in the Concordia St. Paul Summer League tonight. Neither of these teams are in the top half of the CSPSL. Both these teams were a combined 10-44 during the winter season. It was the first time I had charted many of these players. For the most part both teams were on the smaller side with the exception of the Haglund sisters of Hastings. In fact the theme of the day was sisters with Haglunds, Tjomslands, and Garibays.
In game one South St. Paul edged out Hastings 19-13. SSP scored on their final six possessions on an 11-4 run to take the first contest. Freshman to be Mackenzie Garibay had 7 points for SSP in the first game. Hastings failed to score the last three possessions. The odd fact in this game was there were actual free throws shot. SSP went to the line three times in the last minute making four of them.
The Raiders didn't waste any possessions at the start of the second game. Hastings scored on their first six possessions and built up a 13-2 lead. SSP didn't help their cause with six straight non scoring possessions. Hastings won game two 22-11. How many of those points were automatic after fouls? Hastings had 11, or half their points given to them. SSP had 8 of their 11 handed over on automatic points.
SSP held the early lead with a 5-1 lead and scored on their first three possessions. Hastings took their first lead at 10-8 in the middle of five straight scores. The Raiders held off SSP's comeback tries. Each time SSP closed to one, Hastings pushed back out. SSP last closed to 18-17 with under two minutes after a jumper by Mackenzie Garibay. That was to be the Packers last points. Hastings finished with five straight scores to cement their win. Erin Haglund provided five points for the Raiders. She was consistent throughout each game and finished with a game high 17 points.
