MIDWEST GIRLS CLASSIC
Ames, Iowa
15u Semifinals
TEAM IOWA 54, FURY 15s 43

Team Iowa broke free from the Fury with an 11-0 run in the second half to advance to the 15u finals in the Midwest Classic. That run, plus a 20 free throw attempt advantage at the free throw line, sent Team Iowa on their way.

In the first half the Fury had the advantage most of the time. Their widest lead came at 9-4 after a pair of free throws by Shannon O’Toole. But the fouls were soon piling up on the Fury. Tessa Cichy was saddled with three in the first half. The other factor working in favor of Team Iowa was their persistence on the offensive boards. There were occasions where Team Iowa had three cracks at scoring. The Fury lead maintained out to 22-17 with a little over two minutes to go. The Fury failed to score their last seven possessions with only one possession ending in a turnover. TI finished the half with five straight points to tie it up 22 all at the break. Laura Brewer had nine points at half for TI.

The Fury drought went from bad to worse with seven more empty trips to start the second half. So stretching back over two halves TI had a 12-0 run. They led 28-22 after an initial 6-0 run to start the half. The size inside was starting to take its toll. The smallest player on the TI squad is 5-9. Their starting line up averages slightly under 6-0 and all the players look like cookie cutters with the lean, athletic look. The Fury average height is 5-10, but there is a couple of differences. TI has long wing spans and can get up and stay in the air longer. The Fury battled back to tie it at 31 when they suffered another power outage on offense. This time it lasted six possessions. TI scored on six of their seven chances and TI led 42-31 before the Fury stopped the bleeding. The Fury did score four straight times to cut the TI lead to 46-41 with 2:04 left after a three by Morgan Zabel. After that the Fury only scored one more time in their last six possessions. A key possession came on a TI possession when Allison Emrich was fouled. She made the first and missed the second free throw. Virginia Johnson was their for the rebound. She was fouled and duplicated Emrich’s results at the line. This time Brittney Steffney grabbed the rebound and eventually Kiah Stokes scored. Those four points on one possession made the Fury comeback more of a climb.

At the same time this game was going on Steven Froemming was reporting on the other 15u semifinal won by the All Iowa Attack over the Cornhusker Shooting Stars Judds 55-48.
