ROGERS BREAKDOWN TOURNAMENT
GOLD DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
BECKER bulldogs 41, MAPLE GROVE CRIMSON 38

Becker rallied to beat Maple Grove 41-38 in the Gold Division championship. Becker finished with a 11-4 run to take the contest.

It is a new era in Becker as they are making the transition to life without Brianna Mastey and Shelley Stemper. Plus coach Justin Hegna (one of the Breakdown’s owners) has left the sidelines for the boardroom.

The Bulldogs took a bite out of the lead first with five straight points on their first three possessions. Maple Grove didn’t score until their 6th possession and didn’t score a basket until their 9th. Becker led 12-6 when their offense sputtered. They only scored one point in the next seven possessions. The Crimson went on a 9-1 run to take a 15-13 lead. Julie Kruse had six straight points in the run , four on second chancers. Becker tied it (one of four ties in the half). The last tie came at 19 all. After that Becker shut down for six possessions while MG tacked on four more points to lead 23-19 at the break. Kruse had 9 at the half for MG.

MG got off to another slow start in the second half. This time it was possession #7 that they scored for the first time and possession # 9 where they scored their first from the floor. Becker managed to tie it twice, the last time at 24. MG led 34-30 after a three by Steph Pappas with 7 minutes left. After that the Crimson only scored twice in their last 13 possessions. Becker finished the game with their 11-4 run. Jessie Althoff had 6 in this run. Rey Robinson provided Becker with their first lead of the second half with one free throw 37-36. Althoff scored from the floor for a 39-36 Becker win. MG turned the ball over their next three possessions. Leah Sanger added a free throw for a 40-36 lead with 42.8 seconds left. Kayla Gudmunson tacked on a free throw for the Bulldogs final points. Jen Field scored on a steal with 21.8 seconds left for MG to cut the deficit to 41-38. Robinson missed the front end of a one and one and Gerdes grabbed the board for MG. The Crimson had three cracks at tying the game but Ellen Edison’s attempts never found the bottom of the net.
