All Iowa Attack Tournament
16u semifinals
NEBRASKA CSS BISON 64, NEBRASKA TWISTERZ 43

The CSS Bison got out to a fast start and also finished fast as they dictated the tempo and pace in this semifinal against a home state rival the Twisterz 64-43. In fact there were subplots in this game as Seward teammates battled each other and former Crete player, now at Lincoln Southeast, Marissa Kastanek, faced a former teammate in Kate Edwards.

CSS Bison scored on seven of their first nine possessions as they built out a 16-5 lead. The Twisterz took time out at 7-4 to no avail. The Bison used balance and defense in getting the lead. They scored off missed baskets in transition, they moved sharp and crisp on the half court game; they connected from down town, and they crashed the offensive boards. The Twisterz cut the margin to 16-10 as post Stacia Robertson completed an old fashioned three point play. Robertson went to the line five times in the first 12 possessions as the Twisterz looked to get the ball inside and get the Bison in foul problems. It was a fairly physical first half with a combined 32 free throws shot by both teams. The Bison continued to put distance between themselves and the Twisterz and led 37-22 at the half. The leading scorer, however, was Robertson of the Twisterz with 10 points.

The Bison pushed their lead to 48-31 early in the second half with the bigger players, Emily Cady and Alyssa Kamphaus, the Seward connection, delivering 8 of the first 11 points. The Twisterz cut the margin to 48-38 with 7 unanswered points with their Kansas import, Karly Buer, connecting on five. The rest of the way the Bison outscored their instate rivals 16-5. At one point the Bison scored on four straight possessions, four of which were transition baskets after missed shots.

One nice thing about this contest--both teams had their names on the back of their jerseys. That is a huge help when identifying players. It is a smart move on their part. I wish more teams/programs would follow their lead.

While we were at Ames Middle school watching this contest Steven Froemming was back at the Courts on Duff watching a younger version of the CSS beating All Iowa Attack 60-42.
