D1 Openers Go Well For First Time Coaches

Three Big 10 coaches opened their new jobs with wins.

Illinois pounded Eastern Illinois 86-56. Lori Bjork (Johnston, IA) led Illinois with 22. Jenna Smith (Bloomington Kennedy) added 16.

Michigan State triumphed over IUPUI 65-35. Alyssa DeHaan (Grandville, MI) had 18 for the Spartans.

Penn State beat Arizona 87-78. Janessa Wolff (Park Rapids) had 2 points for the Nittany Lions.
other Big 10 teams----

Minnesota beat UC Riverside 57-49. Emily Fox led MN with 13. Leslie Knight (Hopkins) added 12. The StarTribune credits rebounding for the win. The Pioneer Press looks at the second half comeback.

Indiana beat Albany 67-59. Jamie Braun (Marshfield, WI) had 14 for the Hoosiers.

Wisconsin took care of Cleveland State 82-62. Jolene Anderson (South Shore, WI) had a career high of 37 points for the Badgers. Tara Steinbauer (Bloomington Kennedy) had 9, Alyssa Karel (Cretin-Derham Hall) and Sarah Ingison (Concordia Roseville) each had 0. The Wisconsin State Journal looks at the "ugly" contest from afar.

Northwestern beat Dayton 76-70 in overtime. Melissa Miller (Breck) did not score for NW.

Maryland beat Princeton 76-52 in the WNIT opener. Jillian Schurle (Hopkins) had 5 and Ali Prichard (Apple Valley) did not score for Princeton.

Stanford hit the century mark against Yale 100-44.

South Dakota State bumped off Arkansas State 77-67. Ketty Corneman (Yankton, SD) had 19 and Stacie Oistad (Sartell) had 16, both career highs for SDSU. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader looks at the post Megan Vogel era.

Oakland beat Columbia 67-52. Jessica Pike (Clawson, MI) led Oakland with 23. Chelsea Frazier (Breck) had 9 for Columbia.

American beat Longwood 70-61. Talicia Jackson (DeLaSalle) led American with 22 points.

Northern Iowa beat Colorado State 72-58. Danielle Wubbens (Charles City, IA) had 14 points for UNI. Lauren Young (Edina) had 9 points for CSU. Former Breckers Kelly Finley and Emily Neal had 7 each while Elle Queen (Minnetonka) had 4 for the Rams.

St. Mary's CA beat Prairie View A&M 87-80. Kandis Brown (Lakeville) had 21 points for Prairie View.

Central Michigan beat Illinois Chicago 76-71. It was coach Sue Guevara's opener for CM. Britni Houghton (Lansing Waverly) and Angel Chan (Wyoming Park) each had 16 for Central Michigan. Jessie Miller (Holy Angels) had 19 for UIC. Guevara is used to rebuilding programs. From the Grand Rapids Press.

UMKC beat Central Arkansas 73-63. Alyssa Klein (Okoboji, IA) had 11 and Marta Waalen (St. Paul Central) had 7 for UMKC.

UW Milwaukee beat Chicago State 88-76. Traci Edwards (Menasha, WI) had 30 points for UWM. Lindsay Laur (Cretin-Derham Hall) had 5 and Maurika Hickman (Mpls North) added 2 points for the Panthers.

UW Green Bay beat Drake 78-66 to open the Matt Bollant era. Kayla Groh (Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah) had 20 points for UWGB. Staci Beckel (Waseca) did not score for UWGB. Lauren Dybing (St. Croix Lutheran) had 7 for Drake. Jill Martin (Norwalk, IA) had 15 points for the Bulldogs. The Drake play was called Lackadaisical by the Des Moines Register. New Mexico beat Western Michigan 85-62. Amy Beggin (Roseville) had 19 for New Mexico. Jessica Kielpinski (Mandan, ND) did not score. Tierra Delahoussaye (Detroit Country Day) along with Sarah Dreher (Niles, MI) had 10 for Western Mich.

Nebraska beat UTEP 81-74. Cory Montgomery (Cannon Falls) had 7 for Nebraska. Jaerica Hughes (Southfield-Lathrup, MI) had 27 for UTEP.

Boise State beat Loyola Marymount 71-67. Sierra Moeller (Pierre, SD) did not score for Boise State.
