Out & About: Kimball/Swanville

KIMBALL cubs 83, SWANVILLE bulldogs 29

If you remember the Motown group the Marvelettes then you might remember one of their songs---"Destination Anywhere." That in a nutshell describes tonight's out & about.

Why this game?
A. It was one of only a handful of games in the state today. Not many teams want to play on Monday after Thanksgiving.
B. It was the only one within driving distance.

There may have been more compelling games (probably there were not any real compelling games in the state), but the hour driving distance made this the destination.

A bit of background on the match up: Kimball is a AA team, Swanville is A. Both teams have not have recent success. Kimball has five wins in the last three years, Swanville has four. Swanville last year averaged 26 ppg and gave up 71, a difference of 45 points on average. Swanville has only 10 players out for their team. There is no JV or B team. So from the pinnacle of games on Saturday night with #1 vs #2 in the AAAA level I watched teams almost 180 degrees away from that.

But the odd thing was Kimball didn't play along with expectations.

Don't get me wrong, they will have to fight for wins, this year, but they showed some flashes of ability and understanding of the game. The game was slower than Saturday's game, but there were more possessions. Turnovers happened when no one was near. Shots were labored.

Swanville, on the other hand, looks like they don't pick up a ball from March to November. Kimball looks like they have put some time into the offseason.

Kimball led 13-0 before Swanville's Tracy Fruechte hit a shot from the left corner snapping a 14 possession scoring drought. Kimball's press provided many turnovers. By 9:50 in the first half Kimball called their dogs off and it was 22-6. Both teams played zones. Kimball had some outside range, Swanville didn't. Swanville endured another 19 possession drought later in the first half.

Everybody got in the act in the second half for Kimball. 13 different Cubs found the bottom of the net. Swanville had another 13 possession drought in the second half.

The fact is this game was by no means compelling, but it was useful in that it illustrates the differences between classes, and ranked and unranked teams.

For the most part the evaluations can be summarized: needs to work on ball handling. Needs to work on decisions. Strength and quickness needs improvement. That applies to both teams.
