MOORHEAD spuds 66, EASTVIEW lightning 60
Kelsey Jacobson of Moorhead broke Eastview's back with three consecutive 3s in the second half to help Moorhead upset Eastview 66-60. Five players fouled out in this extremely physical contest, four for Eastview. This game matched two teams that have spent time in the top 10, with Eastview #5 in the last poll, while Moorhead at #10. Moorhead is now 18-3, while Eastview falls to 17-5.
A couple of trends were evident in the first half. The physical nature of the contest with the fouls was working against Eastview. Moorhead made 13 points at the line in that half alone. Cassie Hooten was popped in the nose and had to leave the game due to a bloody nose. She got blood on the uniform and had to change jerseys with Kasey Steckler. Eastview led early 8-6, but Moorhead's Gina Jaroszewski nailed a three for a momentary 9-8 lead. On the next Eastview possession DaNae Moore scored two rebound baskets. On the first she was fouled but missed the free throw. Brittany Rud kept the possession alive and after two more misses, Moore grabbed another rebound and scored again to make it Eastview 12-9. Moorhead closed to 15-13 when Eastview started a 6-0 run to make it 21-13 with 7:19 to go. Moorhead was stuck in a 7 possession drought. Then, the pendulum swung back to Moorhead's side and the Spuds went on a 9-0 run. All nine of those points came via the charity stripe. There was no Lightning strikes for nine possessions. Eastview finished up the scoring finished up the scoring in the first half on their last two possessions to make it 25-22 at half. The last was a 15 footer from Kelsey North in to protect Eastview players that were accumlating more fouls than the folks were accumulating snow in upstate NY.
Moorhead opened the second half scoring with another of the big trends: a three by Jenna Dolence from the right corner. They scored on four of their first five possessions. But Eastview was matching Moorhead in scoring as they were 6/7 and pushed their lead to 38-31. Three players provided the points: Sam Mehr had 5, McSperron and Sheppard both added four. Moorhead took a time out right before Sheppard's shot from the left corner. Then the winds shifted, and Moorhead started running hand off ball screens to free up their 3 game. Jacobson hit her first three from the top of the left key to cut the lead to 38-34. One non scoring possession passed and then the Spuds struck gold on five straight possessions, with another 3, this time from Tricia Vanyo. Jaroszewski hit the only two pointer in the sequence from a shot at the free throw line and then Jacobson nailed three straight from behind the arc to close out a 17-4 run. Eastview was tired of seeing lightning striking five times in that sequence and took a time out with 8:27 to go and trailing 48-41. Eastview did cut the lead to 48-45 and that was as close as it was going to be. Moorhead was done with the 3 ball at this point. Of the next 18 Moorhead points 14 came at the line. Moorhead was 8/10 in their possessions to close out the game, while Eastview was 6/10. Moore fouled out at 2:50 with Hooten matching her for Moorhead at 1:46. Then the Eastview avalanche of Rud (1:08) Mehr (19.0) and Wessel (7.0) finished on the pine. Eastview's McSperron had 8 points in the last 1:30 to try to close the gap. McSperron had 17 in the second half, 22 for the game, while Jacobson had 20 in the second half and also 22 for the game.
