SHOT SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Here is a good article from David Friedman of 20 Second time out on shot selection.
In the article Doug Collins lists his four requirements for taking a good shot. I have seen all these rules violated this year many times over.

I would like to add one more: floor awareness.
#1 Do not take 18 footers, they are worth the same as a lay up and not as much as 19-9. I can't stand seeing kids stradle the 3 point line and heave up the world's longest twos.
#2 Also players come in too shallow on the transition and make the transition lay up much harder. Same goes for posting. Most players are too low on the blocks and when they turn they have no angle.
