BECKER bulldogs 35, ROGERS royals 34 OVERTIME

Brianna Mastey scored the game winner on a post up with 9.8 seconds left to help Becker to a 35-34 win over Rogers in Mississippi 8 action. Becker came back from a 26-18 deficit in the second half, and also trailed 34-31 with 30 seconds left.

This game started off with both teams trying to gain traction. Rogers struck paydirt with a basket by Camille Loughlin off an assist from Amanda Chesness with some interior passing. That was the only basket for the first 4:30 of the contest. Rogers led 6-0 before Becker connected. Brianna Mastey scored at the line 5:30 into the game. Becker opened the game with an 0/8 drought. Rogers pushed the lead up to 12-4 on a dribble penetration pass from Casey Mann to Loughlin. Rey Robinson hit a three and Brianna Mastey scored from the free throw line to cut the margin to 12-9. On Rogers' next possession Stephanie Williams cashed in a 3 from the left corner. Rogers then fell into a 7 possession drought. Becker had a 7-0 run with Shelly Stemper hitting a 3 from the right corner and later adding a free throw. Brianna Mastey capped the run with a transition lay up and free throw. Just as before Williams nailed a three on the next Rogers possession which started a three possession scoring streak. Williams added two free throws in the 7-0 Rogers run. Rogers led 22-16 at half.

Rogers was really milking possessions at the start of the second half. Combining the last three possessions in the first half and the three to start the second Rogers was 5/6 in scoring sequence and 11-2 in their run. Rogers led 26-18 at 14:30 to go. They only managed four points the rest of the second half. At this point in the game Becker started going inside. Brianna Mastey started things off with a rebound basket, but she missed the free throw for a potential 3 point play. That started a five possession Becker scoring streak. Jessie Althoff scored the next three possessions and again they all came on second chance points. In fact 8 of the 10 points were a direct result of second chance points. Becker took their second lead of the game and first time in the second half with a baseline drive on the left side by Brianna Mastey. Rogers tied it up on their next possession with a Mann runner at 8:30. Then both teams fell into the drought hole. Both Becker and Rogers had dry spells of six. The difference was Rogers had 4 possessions ending in turnovers, while Becker had 2. Becker took the lead on a shot by Althoff in the right corner with 3 minutes left. Rogers again answered on their next possession with Williams scoring on a pass from Mann on the back side of the 1/3/1 zone. Rachel Gilbert then traveled giving the ball back to Rogers with 2:24 to go. Rogers then sat with the ball for 28 touches down to 35.3 ticks left. After the Becker time out they worked it down to Chesness, but she missed from the left side. Stemper go the board and Becker called another timeout with 10.9 left. They went to their money player Brianna Mastey and she drove the left baseline, but Rogers played fine defense and Mastey's shot angle was taken away. She hit the back board and Rogers got the ball with 3.5 left. They got off a desperation 3 by Williams and it was off to overtime.

Both teams opened the OT with turnovers. A Becker steal led to a rushed shot by Althoff in transition that went out of bounds. Rogers then milked the possession with 12 touches before drawing the foul. Loughlin went to the line and made the first, but missed the second shot. Brianna Mastey matched her with the second free throw after she was fouled being posted up. Again Rogers went to the line with Williams cashing in at the line first, but missing the second. Brianna Mastey got the rebound. Stemper took a 3 that bounced out. Williams got the rebound and was immediately fouled. She missed her one and one chance. Brianna Mastey got the rebound. Gilbert tried to drive the lane and it was snatched by Mann. She too was fouled and made the first to put Rogers back up 33-31. Althoff got the rebound on the second, but brought the ball down right into the waiting arms of Heather Brunn and the possession arrow pointed Rogers' way. Brunn was fouled with 30.4 ticks left. She added one final point to the Rogers total to make it 34-31. On the next Becker possession Chelsea Lieser drove the right baseline and scored and was fouled by Chesness. Lieser missed the free throw, and Chesness got the board. Brianna Mastey then drew the foul as Chesness swung into her with 22.2 seconds left. Brianna Mastey then made the game winner. Rogers did not get a shot off as they worked the left sideline. Becker had a grind it out, grunt win 35-34.

Rogers controlled the tempo of this game. In my system of possession tracking Rogers had 5 possessions that went over two lines. (A line usually has 14 touches). Rogers slowed the game down and tried to find the weaknesses in the Becker defense. Becker prevented most of the penetrations that Rogers tend to favor. What the slow down did however was to make Becker a little more rushed/hurried trying to get their rhythm into their normal speed. Rogers did an excellent job of taking away the Becker transition game. They cut angles and forced no shots at times.
When Becker started their comeback they started to pound the ball inside. Early in the game they were content with the perimeter game. All 14 points in the second half came from Brianna Mastey and Althoff. BM is hard to stop in the blocks.
Both teams need to sharpen up their free throw game. Rogers looked to take advantage at the line, but in overtime they left four points at the line. Becker also left points at the line, but they tended to be on three point plays, so they at least squeezed two points off the possession. The ironic thing is Rogers actually had more scoring possessions than Becker--check out the floor %.
The pp100 were quite low, but for two teams that know each others every move that is what you can expect.
If you noticed, those familiar with Rogers, Jennifer Dowd did not play. She was dressed, but didn't take the floor. She has a foot injury and may be ready for the sections.
