Dakota Showcase, Augustana

Quarterfinals
METRO STARS BLACK 51,
KANSAS CITY HUSTLE 41

Metro Stars Black continued to showcase their defense with a strong effort over Kansas City Hustle. KCH started to awaken late in the game, but the defense along with the free throw shooting for MSB gave them the game and a trip to the semifinals.

The suffocating defense started to kick in for MSB after the first possession. KCH scored on a second shot to start the game but then endured an 11 possession drought. They also suffered a 7 spot later in the half. MSB had a 9-0 run to go up 15-6. MSB closed the half with four consecutive scores to lead 23-11 at the break. Courtney Boylan had 10 at half.

That tough nosed saran wrap defense continued for MSB in the second half. KCH had started with an 8 possession drought (11 if you add in the first half). Another six possession dry spell didn't help the KCH cause. MSB had a 5/6 possession string to go up 38-18 with under four minutes left. Then KCH's alarm clock went off, and Renae Shippy was answering it with 3s. In less than two minutes KCH went on a 11-0 run with three 3s by Shippy. The score stood at 40-29. After MSB timeout, they put down four free throws to bump the lead back up to 44-29 with 1:11 left. Shippy again hit a 3 to kick off a five possession scoring string for KCH. But it was a story of too little, too late. MSB survived the midnight hour with a 51-41 win and a trip to the semis.

I normally don't highlight a stat, but not one free throw?
Interesting fact #1: MSB did not score a two point field goal in the second half. It was two 3s; and 22 free throws. No player had more than one field goal other than Boylan.
Interesting fact #2: KCH for the first 24 minutes had a frigid pp100 of 31.0 and floor % of .143; in the last 6 minutes they were sizzling with 186.7 pp100 and floor % of .733.
