This game took place on Sunday, May 28
Memorial Day Classic, Menomonie, WI
Team WI Select 16 53, Team WI 17 35

A word of warning: Team WI Select 16 did have some "ringers" on their squad (18s) to fill the squad due to Memorial day plans of some of their teammates. Specifically Ana Wurtz.

This anticipated game turned out to be less than scintillating as TWS16 dominated, controlled, and executed efficiently in a lopsided championship game. It may be because of the heat & humidity that TW17, after a robust performance in the quarterfinals, looked rather lack luster.

TW17 actually led at 6-4, but it was all TWS16 after that as they went on a 17-5 run with 8/10 scoring possession streak. They had a couple of three strings. Heidi Baernwald provided six of the points, but everyone was contributing, and no one was stopping them. TW17 appeared hesitant, that may have been the heat zapping energy. TW17 also had a six possession drought with four ending up in turnovers. TWS16 went into the break with a 28-16 lead thanks to a three from the corner right at the buzzer by Taylor Wurtz. The momentum clearly was riding on TWS16.

Lucy Dernovsek unleashed her trey attack in the early part of the second half and cut the lead to 32-22. The sharper executing TWS16 did not crack, but accelerated their play. TW17 went into a five possession drought with four of them ending up as turnovers and that led to three points for TWS16. TWS16 went on a 13-3 scoring burst with 6/8 possession providing the firepower. The run started with a put back by Julie Wojta. The next two scores were the result of turnovers and lay ups. The last three were all 3s--adding insult, and point margin, to injury. Both teams wound down with TW17 having a 5 possession drought, but this time it was mainly misfires. TWS16 also had a rough patch at the end with a six possession drought with five ending in turnovers. It didn't help TW17 as they only scored one basket.

BY THE NUMBERS
team, points, possessions, pp100, floor %
Team WI Select 16 53, 56, 94.6, .446
Team WI 17 35, 55, 63.6, .273
I know it was late in the day, and it was hot and miserable, but that was for both ends. For all the firepower TW17 demonstrated in the quarters, it was spent for the big game. Which team is the real TW17? the one that scored 125 pp100 in the quarters or the team that had half that in the championship 63.6? My guess is it is somewhere in the middle. Their floor % numbers nosed dived as well with a .615 in the quarters to a below freezing .273. Their defensive numbers also stood on their head going from an air tight 43 pp100 to double 94.6
On the other hand, TWS16 was pretty consistent--there were only two points seperating the pp100 for them and the floor % numbers were only seperatated by 16 points. Their defense was pretty consistent as well with five points the differance in pp100, and actually they kicked it up a notch on D in this game.

Next up: tomorrow morning with the news of the day, with tomorrows Out & about with the 12 & under championship in Menomonie. I don't usually go so young, but their is a story behind it.
