NORTH DAKOTA TO MOVE UP TO D1
North Dakota will join their long time rival North Dakota State at D1. UND will go through an "exploratory" phase in 2007-08. Full transition won't be complete until 2011-12. The reasons for the move are layed out here in the Grand Forks Herald
The first game between the two may take place in the 2008-09 year, but 2009-10 may be a better bet. Here is the rivalry aspect from the GF Herald.
What do the coaches think? You don't have to wonder anymore. This time we go to the Fargo Forum.
What will happen to the venerable, and now vulnerable, North Central? With NDSU, SDSU, Northern Colorado and now UND leaving only six schools are left behind. St. Cloud State has been making some rumblings about the "exploratory" process. South Dakota may also be looking.
The biggest benificiary may be the Northern Sun. If the above schools leave, then a merger with the remaining teams with the Northern Sun may be in the cards.
Also it means there is another potential D1 program to choose from close to home for MN and ND players.
Stay tuned.
