This game took place Sunday in the Mpls Midtown Y HS Red division
Southern Minne Magic 49, Lady Komets 15

This was another game where a team of players from a wide geographic area beat up on what was primarily a school team. The Lady Komets are from Kasson-Mantorville, MN a AA team close to Rochester. They did have a couple of players from Hayfield. The bigger, quicker, stronger SMM took control on the opening tip and scored on Haley Loesch's basket. It was never a question who was going to win. SMM didn't produce like the 43 LHE did in their runaway, but it wasn't far off. SMM jumped out to an 11-2 lead, then had a five scoring possession string and a 10-3 run. By then their lead was 21-6. The Lady Komets were suffering from three droughts in the first half, all of them six possessions. It was primarily bad shooting that did in the Komets. Of all those possessions added up, 11 were the result of misfires.

The second half had more of the same, except less of it. Running time ended the contest very early. SMM did put together another string, this time a four string, in a 9-0 run that left them in the lead 45-13. The Lady Komets went 14 possessions before finding the bottom of the net for their only points of the half. Hayley Darrington racked up 8 points in a limited half.

Bigger players alter shots. If the 3ball is not falling, and the transition game is shut down, the half court game will be a grind.
SMM did what they needed to do. They have improved from the first game I saw them at Hastings in the AAU qualifier. Most teams by this time have practiced a bit longer and the clumsy, crashing into each other, or zigging when the other player thought you were going to be zagging seems to have left most teams. It is hard to get a good read on the numbers for offense or defense in games like this.
We will see the SMM against the Quest tomorrow and compare the numbers against a team more along their likes.
