This game took place on Sunday, June 11 at the Mpls Midtown Y
Southern Minne Magic 53, Quest 49
SMM led the whole game except at 2-1 when Quest scored the first basket. SMM only made one field goal for their first 11 points. In fact they didn't score their second basket in the half court game until Hayley Darrington scored a 3 from the left corner for the 20th point. SMM had four points made off of put backs. But most of the points were cashed in at the line. 11 of the 26 points SMM scored in the first half came at the line. That compares to the four made by Quest. Katie Van Duynhoven led the way for SMM with 8 in the first half, followed closely by Darrington with 7. They were both out scored by Becca Friestleben who had 12 after the period was over. Neither team had major runs, but the Quest did suffer a six possession drought, but the SMM didn't really exploit the situation as it was 15-10 when the drought ended. SMM led 26-22 at half.
The Quest pulled up to 29-27 with Taylor House's basket. Van Duynhoven scored on a reverse to increase the margin for SMM. The Magic did put together a five possession string, but the Quest kept pace as well. Melissa Fitz canned a three to cut SMM's lead to 38-35. That was as close as the Quest would get the rest of the way until Friestleben's 3 with six seconds to go. But the opportunities passed. Fitz did dial long distance three times for the half. Taylor House scored all her 8 points in the second half. The top scorer for the half was Darrington with a mix of 3s, drives, transition, and free throws
SMM again went to the line early and often with 11 made free throws in this half. Quest did manage to make 7, but the more aggressive SMM forced Quest to sit some of their better scoring options.

BY THE NUMBERS
Southern Minne Magic 53, 64, 82.8, .438
Quest 49, 65, 75.4, .369
SMM has improved its team play from the Hastings state qualifier tournament. They are more aggressive to the glass and are, in general, more familiar with each other. The Quest was a better opponent than the Lady Komets, but not as tough as the Triple Threat that I saw earlier in the year. Quest looked tired after the emotionally draining game against MN Metro Stars 14s. That tiredness resulted in not being in position, and not moving the feet. Key players had to watch from the bench for a good portion of the second half. SMM was able to break the perimeter defense most of the time. SMM allowed five 3s on the day, while Quest permitted two.
Next up: tomorrow morning with the general news followed by an Out & about later tomorrow with Total Package vs MN Metro Stars 15s.
