This game took place on Sunday, July 8
Adidas Mid-American Tournament, Hopkins
16u semifinals
SOUTHERN MINNE MAGIC BLACK 54,
MN STARS ANTL 48

Southern Minne Magic Black won this semifinal that had plenty of turnovers and missed opportunities. SMMB started this game off hot with four straight scores and a 9-0 lead. MN Stars Antl had to battle out of that hole. Both teams had a series of turnovers, including rapid fire turnovers by both teams. One sequence looked like this rebound, fumble; steal, fumble; steal, bad pass; steal....all that took place in less than 20 seconds. Both teams were anxious to score, but rushed too much, hurried too much, and didn't take good care of the ball. SMMB, after the 9-0 start then went into a 12 possession drought, five via turnovers. MSA did take some advantage of that down time with their own 7-0 run. SMMB had another 7 possession drought later in the first half, five of which were turnovers. MSA also had droughts, but not as severe. Their biggest dry spell was five. The game was tied six times after MSA tied it at 11. A free throw by Jessie Althoff gave MSA a 24-23 lead at the half.

It remained a tight affair to start the second half with two more ties. MSA led 31-29 when SMMB went on an 8-0 run with two straight 3s from Hayley Darrrington and Brittney Lodermeier. That gave SMMB a 37-31 lead. MSA came back and cut the margin to 41-39. Droughts struck both teams again with SMMB with a fiver, But MSA had an 8 possession drought which did hurt their cause because SMMB snapped out of their offensive sluggishness with four straight scores to make it 48-39. There was less than three minutes left at this point. MSA rose up from their depths with five straight scores. A common thread in these scores was the second chance basket. Hali Hendrickson started it off with a put back with 2:15 left. All nine points came after the initial shot in their possession missed. Jenny Ramey was fouled on a 3 attempt and she drained all three. That cut the margin to 50-47 with 57 seconds left. Althoff made a free throw to make it 51-48 with 40 seconds left. That ended MSA's scoring. SMMB added three free throws with Tanya Kaufmann adding two and Leslie Wilson finishing the scoring.

As a whole both groups can use work on their ball handling, their vision, their passing choices and decisions. This is a blanket statement, but valid.
