Minnesota State AAU Tournament
Cooper High School
16u Preliminary Round
'STANGS 66, SOUTHERN MINNE MAGIC WHITE 49
The 'Stangs crashed the Minnesota state tournament. On two counts they are unique: 1. They are from South Dakota with not one Minnesota player on the roster 2. They are basically from one school, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (only Alisa Brown attends another school). On top of that they have been up to the Twin Cities to play in AAU tournaments, but they were 15u and D2. They made the move to 16 D1 this tournament and did very well. In fact this was a minor upset with the #17 Stangs topping #16 SMMW.
Out of the gate Paige Beck scored the first three baskets for the Stangs. Southern Minne Magic White kept pace however. Both teams suffered droughts: SMMW didn't score for 11 possessions, the Stangs had an 8 drought. The Stangs broke free midway through the first half. SMMW led 13-12 and Stangs went on an 8-0 run. On a key possession the Stangs scored four points. Courtney Vande Hoef hit a three and was fouled after the shot. She made one free throw. They could have had two more as the Stangs picked up the rebound but the shot didn't connect. That moved the score to 24-17. At half it was Stangs 34-24.
In the second half SMMW only closed the margin to 10 59-49 with four minutes left. The Stangs met the challenge by shutting out SMMW and closing with a 7-0 run.
