SOMERSET spartans 71, DURAND panthers 56
I traveled acrosss state lines to catch some Wisconsin action. In a Middle Border conference battle Somerset upset Durand 71-56. In the first game they played on January 27 it was all Duand 66-38. Tonight was Durand's first conference loss and second overall as they move to 17-2 on the season, 12-1 in conference. Somerset is 14-4 overall, and 9-4 in conference.
Someset drew first blood and it was 6-1 Megan Plourde canning a 15 footer from the left wing. Durand matched it with Kelsey Weber's two free throws. That started a 6/8 scoring sequence and 12-6 run for Durand. Of those scoring possessions Durand was working the ball inside against the taller Spartans. Samantha Hoyt was the only score from outside the paint with a 3 from the left wing. Somerset finished the quarter with six points and had the lead at the break 14-12.
The fouls were starting to pile up for Somerset in the second quarter. Three players picked up their 3rd foul in the 2nd quarter. Plourde picked hers up at 5:27, and then had to sit the rest of the quarter. Durand tied it at 14 and that was the last time they were tied. Somerset strung together five straight scoring possessions late in quarter on taking a 23-20 lead and mushrooming it out to 32-20 on a 9-0 run. Alison Marson had 7 of those points. But Durand finished the half with three straight scores on a 5-0 run. Somerset led 32-25 at the half.
Durand closed to 37-31, but Somerset fired off on 8/10 offensive possessions and expanded their lead to 14-7 run. Kellie Ring had six of those points. The quarter ended with Somerset in the drivers seat 53-43. Durand would narrow the gap to 55-48 early in the 4th quarter, but it never crossed any lower. Durand did cut it to 66-56 with 47.1 seconds to go, but Somerset cashed in five free throws for the final margin. Plourde had 10 for Somerset in the 4th, but she was equalled by Hoyt's 10. Part of the Durand problem was only two players connected in the 4th, and only Hoyt was able to make a field goal.

Somerset is taller and more athletic that Durand. Durand's biggest starter was 5-9. Somerset had 3 starters 5-10 or bigger topped off by Plourde. I noticed Plourde's name on the high jump list on the track records in the entry way. Durand tried to get Somerset in foul trouble, which they did, but they never expoited the line. Durand left 8 points at the line in the first half. Somerset also was aggressive to the glass and also put Durand in foul trouble.
One other bit of information--there are no seniors starters for Somerset.

Side notes: First--Somerset's uniforms are cut so the shoulder blades are exposed. I haven't seen this type of uniform until tonight.
2nd: at the concession stand they had hot dogs and brats. After all it is Wisconsin.
3rd: the pop is by the glass, a little glass, not the 24 ounce bottles at the other games.
4th: during the national anthem Somerset had six students do the anthem with sign language.
