NORTHFIELD raiders 58, FARIBAULT falcons 51

On a cold (-12.3) night many games were postponed. I called around and found a game that was still a go and that was in Faribault between 1AAA teams Northfield and the hosts. This was a make up game from the postponed game on Dec. 21. Faribault led 39-38 when Northfield went on a 9-0 run on their way to a 58-51 win. With the win Northfield moves to 10-8 and 3rd in the section standings, while Faribault is 5-13 and in 8th place.

Northfield opened the game with Haley Loesch scoring in the paint, but Faribault scored on their first four possessions to take a 7-2 lead all in the paint. Both teams were deliberate with the ball in the half court, Northfield had one possession with 16 touches. Faribault then went on a 7 possession drought, four of which were turnovers. Northfield took advantage of the down time and went on an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead at 10-7. Northfield stretched that lead out to 8 at the biggest in the first half at 25-17. Faribault did close out the half on an up note and shaved three points off the lead. Northfield led 32-27 at the break.

Just like the first half, Faribault scored on their first four possessions and tied the game up at 34. Northfield on the other hand started an 8 possession drought. Ashlee Cherwinka gave Faribault their first lead in the second half with a shot in the paint. Northfield came back and grabbed a 38-36 lead. Jenna Henry hit a crawler for Faribault and was fouled and converted and the Falcons had the their last lead at 39-38 with 10:30 to go. Northfield seized the lead for the last time on a trey by Bri Zabel in the left corner with 9:15 to go. That started a 9-0 run and BZ provided 5 while Haley Loesch had the other four. Northfield led 47-39 as Faribault took a time out with 7:07 to go. Right after the time out Bauer scored on an out of bounds play and was fouled. She added the extra toss and Northfield's lead was shaved to 47-42. The margin maintained for the most part at 5 points. Bauer scored in the paint with 2:12 to go to cut the lead to 52-49. Loesch answered as Northfield reversed the ball and hit her on the left block. She was fouled but did not get the extra point. Northfield then pulled the ball and made four points at the line on two consecutive possessions to lead 58-49. Bauer finished all the scoring with a pull up jumper with 2 seconds left.

The original game I was going to attend was frozen out. Other games on the schedule were unsettled. I called Faribault and they gave the green light.
This game was competitive. Faribault fought and scrapped. Northfield did the proper things on offense and had better shot selections. When they had dry spots, Bri Zabel wasn't involved.
Faribault would rush shots, especially when they trailed. They did get back to the plan, but couldn't get the big shot, or stop when Northfield had their spurt in the second half. No one was really close with the 3 ball.
One interesting fact: Northfield had one more score (27) than Faribault (26). The difference was Northfield had three regular 3s (all Bri Zabel), one old fashioned three point play and limited their missed free throws. Faribault only had one old fashioned 3 pt play.
