Minnesota AAU State Tournament
Cooper HS
16u Sweet 16 Round
MINNESOTA SUNS 80, MN STARS ANTL 60
The #10 Suns shined bright early and upset the #7 MN Stars Antl 80-60. MSA was hit by player absences with two players missing either due to track or tests. Sam Mehr did make it for the second half.
This was a fast paced game with an average possession time of 11.9 seconds, the fastest paced game of the tournament. For example in the games I will put up today the most controlled game was 17.4 seconds per possessions. It doesn't seem like a long time, but it is a big difference.
The Suns rose first as they raced to a 19-3 lead. It could have been worse as the Suns left four points on the table when they were missing free throws. MSA had their first basket at 15-1. MSA had droughts lasting 5, 7, 9, and 7 again in the first half. The Suns did have a five possession run as their offense was humming, clicking and burning bright. The Suns led at half 44-17.
In the second half the Suns expanded their lead to 61-28 for a 33 point margin. The Suns then had a 10 possession drought and only scored one point in 19 possessions. The mountain of a lead they built up saved them as MSA went on a 19-1 run to close to 62-47 with 5:30 left.
