MYAS FALL LEAGUE
Red Division
RASCALS 45, MAPLE GROVE #1 37

The Rascals, a team made up primarily of Minneapolis South players plus a few from DeLaSalle put the pressure on Maple Grove for a 45-37 win. The Rascals were relentless in their full court pressure defense which caused MG to play at a more uncomfortable pace. Along with the defense there was 3 point shooting. The Rascals hit for five on the game. But it was free throws that did MG in. With the aggressive style of play the Rascals employ they pick up their share of fouls. MG missed 6 free throws in the second half (6/12) while the Rascals made MG pay for their fouls to the tune of 8/10 in the second half. The Rascals made one more field goal than MG for the game.

The Rascals led early on the strength of their 3 game with Jenny Houle striking behind the arc three times in the first half. The Rascals led early 8-3 with two Houle 3s in the mix. The Rascals then went dry for five possessions. MG did take advantage of the down time with an 8-2 run to take an 11-10 lead. Anna Gruhlke dropped a three for the MG lead. The Rascals regained the lead with a 6-0 run capped off by a Sarina Baker rainbow 3. Then the pendulum swung back to MG with a 7-0 run on a press lay up by Taylor House to make it 18-16 MG. It was the last lead MG had all night. Houle hit her 3rd three and at the end of the half Tyisha Smith swiped the ball from an errant pass and scored in transition plus canned the "& 1" tom make it 22-18 Rascals at half.

Both teams got out of the gates slowly in the second half. The Rascals continued to push their lead to 26-20. MG's Gruhlke again dropped a bomb to make it 26-23. Smith nailed a three of her own and then scored on a steal lay up in the blink of an eye to make it 31-23. MG answered that challenge with four straight scores and again were within shouting distance at 33-30. The relentless restless Rascals continued their harassment and the lead ballooned back out to 39-31 with 3:30 to go. The Rascals went cold for five possessions and MG took advantage with four points to make it 39-35. But MG could have had more. Alyssa Silva was fouled for an "&1" but missed the free throw. Silva got the rebound however but a turnover negated a potential four point or greater possession. The other two times MG scored in that sequence they left points at the line going 1/2 each time. In the last minute the Rascals scored all their points at the line including four points on one possession by Smith. She was intentionally fouled and drained both, later in the possession she made both ends of a one and one. Those points were the final points scored to make it 45-37. The Rascals next week face Centennial White, the other undefeated MYAS Red Division team.

If you notice MG had more stops, but that might be misleading. Without coach Teas to help I had to photograph and take notes at the same time. One thing that gets jettisoned is the forced turnovers. MG had plenty of turnovers that were either thrown out of bounds or were violations with technically no steals. Coach Teas helps point out forced turnovers during the season. So the 18 is a bit deceiving.
