MYAS FALL LEAGUE
Red Division
CENTENNIAL WHITE 54, CENTENNIAL RED 42
In the battle of Centennial it was White over Red in a split squad game. No one team was stacked with only varsity players like some other organizations in the Fall League.
Red led early 7-4 after an old fashioned 3 point play by Megan Waytashek. But in a civil war game you have to expect a tight contest since the players know each others tendencies and their favorite plays. Also the early morning start may have had something to do with the lack of offensive fireworks in the first half. Red had a 1/11 sequence (five of which were turnovers) while the Whites were in the same boat with a 1/9 run at the same time. The game see sawed in the first half with seven lead changes. The last lead change came on two free throws by Megan Nipe to push the score to 13-12. It was 15-12 at half. Nipe had 8 points for White by half, Kaylee Buffalo was one behind with seven for Red.
In the second half both teams started to loosen up a bit and get in the flow. And it was raining 3s. Both teams combined for 11 in the second half alone. In one sequence there were three 3s in four possessions (Becken, nothing, Steele, Blom). Red trailed by 27-19 when they started a four possession offensive scoring sequence to make it 32-27. After that Red came up empty five straight times. The virus was contagious as White was 1/6 at the same time. But compared to the sluggish first half the second half hummed. White was 62.5 pp100 in the first half and 125.8 in the second. The same held true for the Reds with an anemic 52.2 pp100 in the first half and a much healthier 96.8 in the second.
Centennial has depth. Once upon a time at Osseo, back in 1996 when I was coaching there, the Orioles had a similar talent glut. The talent at Centennial is somewhat similar if not as big (Osseo had 6-5, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 on the front line and a 5-11 point guard). We had players that would start on other teams, and probably even be all conference at some schools, but they were strictly JV at Osseo. It made for strong practices going against solid players. I am thinking that also may hold true at Centennial. It is hard to play 10 kids in a rotation.
